Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebekah Perry.
Rebekah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hi! My name is Bekah and I’m a cottage baker in Dallas Texas. My business is called Sour-Doughnuts and we sell sourdough donuts, cinnamon rolls and other sweet treats.
I’ve been baking my entire life. Starting on a step stool next to my grandma when I was 5 or 6 years old. I watched her in absolute amazement as she threw together flour sugar and spices into the most comforting treats. It became an obsession that never stopped. I practiced and watched endless YouTube tutorials throughout middle school and high school. I brought desserts to every family gathering and holiday. I always knew I wanted to open a bakery and that was my calling. But as I grew older I kept making excuses to not chase that dream. “I’m not ready yet.” “I have to wait for the perfect timing”. Then I had 3 kids and I said “I have to wait until my youngest is in school because I don’t think I can handle being a stay at home mom and running a business.” But then I realized, the “perfect time” doesn’t exist. What if I keep waiting and I never get the chance to do this? Life is short and tomorrow isn’t guaranteed. I just needed to START. So I did. I started exactly where I was, with a 1 year old baby who was just learning to walk, a 2.5 year old and a 4 year old. Looking back that was pretty insane, but I’m so proud of myself for pushing through and juggling it all. I started selling my sourdough goodies to friends and family in April 2025. Then after I slowly accumulated all of the things I needed to run my business more efficiently, I opened to the public in August! I went from selling 3-6 half dozen boxes of donuts to selling out and having to turn down multiple orders. People I didn’t even know became my biggest supporters and cheerleaders. This is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, staying up late and waking up early to bake while balancing being a mom of three, prepping during nap times and any tiny amount of extra time I have in between. But it is also incredibly fulfilling and bringing so much joy. This year I decided to change up my business approach and shifted to doing one market per month in addition to my monthly donut pre-order weekend. I really wanted to expand my reach, meet new people and get my name out there! I have loved getting to know other small business owners and artists at every market I’ve attended. Building relationships within this community is such a beautiful thing. I’m excited to watch my business continue to grow. I put so much love and thought into every single scratch made detail. My goal is to open my storefront within the next 2 years once my youngest is in school. Which I believe is an incredibly realistic goal with how well my business is taking off!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been smooth sailing at all. This is a ton of work juggling being a mom of 3 littles with baking and prepping in my very little amount of spare time. Being a mom of 3 is already multiple full time jobs on its own. But I’m so proud of myself for making it happen. There have been plenty of hiccups along the way but I’ll keep it short and tell you one story. This all happened the week I was prepping for my St.Paddy’s market. I accidentally fell asleep putting my kids to bed resulting in over proofing 24 batches of sourdough brioche which had to be thrown away just 3 days before my market. Then my mixer broke the next day while I was making the replacement dough. The water was shut off on our street for 10 hours due to maintenance issues so I lost an entire day of work. So to make up for all of this lost time I barely slept, like 2-3 hours of sleep for 4 days straight. It felt like the world was working against me. But I chose to get back up and show up anyways even if I couldn’t bring as many things as I was planning on bringing. I pulled it off though and it ended up being my most successful market! So many people I had never even met kept coming up to my booth saying “I drove out here JUST to see you and try your treats!” I was awe struck each time.
Looking back on that series of unfortunate events, I realized the world wasn’t working against me. It was strengthening me, showing me I was capable of and building my confidence. I now know nothing can take me down unless I allow it to. And that’s a very empowering feeling.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I make sourdough donuts, cinnamon rolls, pop pastries, brownies, cookies scones and other sweet treats. What sets me apart from other businesses is every single detail is scratch made without artificial flavorings, dyes, preservatives or high fructose corn syrup. Everything is made with the best quality natural ingredients and gut-healthy sourdough. All of my glazes and jams have 2-3 ingredients vs the long ingredient lists you’ll see on the back of everything at the grocery store. I also put a lot of thought and creativity into the flavor combinations textures and designs for my donuts and baked goods. This is more than baking for me, it’s a creative outlet and artistic expression.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
If you’re passionate about something and have a dream, don’t wait to put it into action. Not everyone is blessed with tomorrow. So just start even if you don’t think you’re ready. Chances are you’re underestimating yourself! Put your all into it and don’t quit even in the moments you want to. It’ll be so worth it!
