Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Alexander.
Hi Kayla, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started Illustrated at 19 years old, while I was still in college with a completely different plan. I was set on going into the medical field. Creating was never something I had to force; it just felt like second nature. In 2022, I launched Illustrated while still in school, running the business and keeping up with classes at the same time.
After about a year of juggling both, I had clear direction from the Lord. This was exactly where He had placed my feet and wanted me to cultivate. It was definitely a hard decision since it was so outside of my comfort zone, but I had a peace that surpassed all understanding. So I took the leap, with faith and full surrender to the Lord, trusting that whatever His will was, I would come into alignment with it.
A lot of people would call it risky. For me, it was faith. Stepping into this industry at a young age, still learning, building something from the ground up, it required me to trust God with what I couldn’t fully see yet. A verse that has continued to guide me is Matthew 6:33: “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
Now, running Illustrated full time, I get to do exactly what I was created to do.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Anyone who tells you entrepreneurship is easy is leaving out a lot of the story.
There are days it feels like a rollercoaster. You never really know what to expect, even within a single day. Things shift, circumstances change, and challenges come whether you are ready or not.
Burnout is something I have had to navigate. When you are running a business, especially in the early stages, everything lands on you and it can get overwhelming fast. One of the most important things I have learned is to make time for rest. God intended rest for us even while we work and cultivate in this life. It refuels you and gives you a clear mind. Without it, you find yourself working from a place of depletion rather than overflow.
The learning never stops. There is always something new to figure out and I will never reach a point where I know it all. Building out systems and processes is something I had to learn along the way, but it is what allows a business to run smoothly and consistently. It saves you from chaos and creates space to actually do the work well.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Illustrated?
Illustrated is a creative digital marketing agency based in Dallas, Texas, specializing in content creation and social media management. We work with forward-thinking brands that are ready to elevate their online presence and we help them do that through content that is visually engaging, high quality, and intentional no matter the industry.
What sets us apart is how we approach the work. We combine creative strategy, current social media trends, and best practices to help our clients build an online presence that actually makes an impact. It’s not just about posting, it’s about showing up in a way that reflects who you are and connects with the right people.
The heart behind Illustrated runs deeper than marketing. Our vision was God-given, and everything we are and everything we do stems from our faith. Genesis 1 was the inspiration — the Lord is the creator of all things, and as His children we inherit that same likeness. That’s where “Created to Create” comes from. It’s not just a phrase, it’s the foundation of why this agency exists.
We work with all kinds of brands, but the common thread is always the same — brands that are ready to grow and trust us to show up for them creatively and strategically.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me is rooted in stewardship. In all things, doing it with excellence and to glorify God.
On a business level, success looks like our clients winning. Seeing their businesses grow, thrive, and succeed. We genuinely care about our clients, and their wins feel like our wins. That matters to us deeply.
And internally, success looks like a team that is established, effective, and efficient. A group of creatives who push each other, unlock new levels of thinking, and cultivate ideas together. Building something that doesn’t just function but actually flows as a unit, that’s something I’m working toward and deeply passionate about.
