Today we’d like to introduce you to E. Nigma.
Hi E., thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my writing journey as a script writer. I was always a movie buff and had dreams of seeing my stories on the big screen. I had a couple of my scripts optioned, but they never went anywhere. Determined to get my stories out to the public, I decided to turn some of those scripts I had developed into novels. I kept pushing forward, with more and more stories, and currently, I spend my time doing podcasts, animation shorts, and videos as well as writing and developing novels.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road is never smooth. One of the things I had to learn was to write for myself, and not others. There’s always this urge to write what’s popular or what sells, but if I’m not proud of the work or the subject matter, the creative flow suffers. To ensure I’m giving my very best, I write in genres/subjects I would want to read. Readers will find you, as there’s always someone out there who is in the same headspace as you are creatively. It’s a challenge, but I find it to be the best flow for me.
Another thing they don’t tell you about being an author is that writing is the easy part. Marketing is the hard part, and it takes the most time/energy to get your product into the hands of prospective readers. I currently attend multiple vendor events, looking to get my books out there as well as maintain an online presence to promote my work. It’s a tiresome effort that can leave you drained at times, but I love what I do, so it makes the work I put in worthwhile.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a novelist, and at the time of this interview, I’ve published/self published a total of 33 novels in multiple genres. As mentioned, my love for movies and TV shows is what motivated my journey into writing. I’m known for my unpredictability when it comes to my writing. The reason I chose the pen name E. Nigma was that I’m a big Batman fan, but secondly and probably most importantly, you never know what you’re going to get with me. I may write a romance, a sci-fi book, or even a horror novel. It all depends on my mood and where my inspiration comes from.
I think what sets me apart from a lot of authors is that I’m willing to take chances in genres that I’m not too familiar with. A lot of authors like to stay in their safe place with one or two genres, and there’s nothing wrong with that at all. I’m just built differently, however, as whenever inspiration enters my mind, I go for it. I want to challenge myself to be a diverse writer who can tell tales in any genre, and I think that’s what I’m most proud of. The ability to test the waters in multiple genres is a big challenge, one that I think I do well.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
What’s funny is that it’s my own work that motivates me! I know it sounds crazy, but when I read some of my older works , it motivates me to keep pushing forward and allows me to become a better version of myself. Also, being a movie buff, any well written movie or TV show always gets me inspired as well. I typically will watch something like The Wire, The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, or Billions whenever I need a charge or creativity. These are some of my favorite shows, and they help get me through those silent times when the books aren’t speaking to me.
