Check Out Sean Starr’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Starr.

Hi Sean, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have over 35 years of experience as a Visual Artist, Master Gilder, and Sign Painter. I specialize in creating original Verre Eglomise gilded glass installations and provide decorative painting, restorations, gilding and sign painting services to other artists, architects, interior designers, collectors and business owners throughout the United States and abroad.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think the biggest challenge over the years is adapting to the changes in how business is conducted and how we communicate. As a traditional craftsman, staying up to date with changes in technologies and computers has been tricky when the work that I create everyday is using old world methods and materials.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My work has evolved over the years with my original roots being in sign painting, I first got heavily involved with gold leaf work around 2005 when I started my current business, Starr Studios. In the early years I was focused on gold on glass signs, and that took me into gilding statuary and my main focus now which is original artwork executed in gold leaf on glass called Verre Eglomise.

I just completed a large Art Deco themed piece for the new Drake’s Hollywood location opening this year in Scottsdale, Arizona. The piece depicts one of the four classical elements, this one is the element of Air. The artwork is 11 feet long and consists of three glass panels that will be installed inside the restaurant. It was executed using a combination of genuine 24k gold leaf, 12k white gold, genuine silver leaf, copper leaf and 18k moon gold.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
It’s hard to predict where things go from here. I am hopeful that with all of the changes that AI seems to be bringing that there is an increased interest in artwork created completely by human beings who do not utilize AI in their design or execution.
