Community Highlights: Meet Marisol of The Beauty Coven

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marisol.

Hi Marisol, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always been drawn to beauty, creativity, and helping people feel confident. I started my journey in the beauty industry over a decade ago while working at Sephora, where I discovered my passion for makeup artistry. At the time, I had no idea it would eventually turn into a business and career that would completely change my life.

Although I earned a degree in Fashion Merchandising and Marketing from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, I found myself continually being pulled back toward the beauty industry. What started as doing makeup for friends and special events eventually grew into bridal makeup, and from there I expanded into permanent makeup, brow artistry, education, and business ownership.

I’m largely self-taught, which meant learning through trial and error, investing in education, and figuring out much of the business side on my own. Building a business from the ground up taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of never stopping learning. Today, I own The Beauty Coven, a beauty studio specializing in bridal makeup, brows, and permanent makeup. What began as a solo venture has grown into a brand that serves hundreds of clients and is now expanding into mentorship, artist training, and team growth.

Looking back, some of the biggest influences on my journey were my parents, who immigrated from Mexico and instilled in me a strong work ethic and the belief that if I wanted something, I had to be willing to work for it. Their example shaped the way I approach both life and business.

While I still love working with clients, my vision has grown beyond providing services. My goal is to help elevate other beauty professionals through education and mentorship while continuing to build a brand that creates confidence, community, and opportunity. It’s been an incredible journey so far, and I feel like I’m just getting started.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not. Like most entrepreneurs, there have been plenty of challenges along the way.

One of the biggest challenges was learning how to run a business while simultaneously trying to perfect my craft. As artists, we’re often taught how to perform a service, but not necessarily how to market ourselves, manage finances, create systems, lead a team, or scale a business. Much of that I had to learn through experience, mistakes, and a lot of trial and error.

Being largely self-taught also came with its own set of challenges. There wasn’t a clear roadmap, so I spent years investing in education, seeking mentorship, and figuring out what worked for me. There were moments of self-doubt, especially in the early years, when I questioned whether I was talented enough, experienced enough, or capable of building something bigger than just a job for myself.

Another challenge has been overcoming the mindset that success only comes from working more hours. In the beauty industry, it’s easy to fall into the trap of trading time for money. As my business grew, I realized I wanted to build something that could have an impact beyond the clients I could physically serve. That’s what sparked my passion for education, mentorship, and helping other artists grow their own businesses.

Looking back, every obstacle taught me something valuable. The difficult seasons forced me to become more resilient, more adaptable, and more intentional about the kind of business and life I wanted to create. While the road hasn’t always been smooth, I wouldn’t change it because those experiences shaped who I am today.

I am the owner of The Beauty Coven, a beauty studio specializing in bridal makeup, permanent makeup, brows, and beauty education. While we offer a variety of services, bridal makeup has become one of the cornerstones of our business. I love being a part of such an important moment in someone’s life and helping clients feel confident, beautiful, and truly like themselves on their wedding day.

Over the years, I’ve become known for creating polished, long-wearing makeup that photographs beautifully while still feeling elevated and wearable. My goal has never been to make someone look like a different person. It’s to enhance what already makes them beautiful.

What sets me apart is that I genuinely view beauty as both an art and a relationship-driven business. Technical skill is important, but so is creating an experience. Whether someone is sitting in my chair for bridal makeup, powder brows, or a training course, I want them to feel heard, comfortable, and cared for.

What I’m most proud of is building a business that has grown primarily through referrals and word-of-mouth. To me, that’s a reflection of the trust my clients place in me and the experience they’ve had. I’m also incredibly proud of the direction the business is heading. While I still love working directly with clients, I’m passionate about helping other beauty professionals grow through mentorship, education, and training. My long-term vision is to build a brand that not only serves clients but also helps elevate artists within the beauty industry.

At its core, The Beauty Coven is about creating confidence, community, and a little bit of magic along the way.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that talent alone is not enough. When I first started, I thought success would come from becoming a better artist. While technical skill is incredibly important, I’ve learned that building a sustainable business requires so much more. It requires consistency, resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to keep learning, even when things don’t go as planned.

I’ve also learned that growth often happens outside of your comfort zone. Some of the biggest opportunities in my career came after taking risks that felt scary at the time, whether that was investing in education, raising my prices, expanding my services, or stepping into a leadership role.

Most importantly, I’ve learned that success isn’t about doing everything yourself. For a long time, I believed that working harder and taking on more clients was the only path to growth. Over time, I realized that true growth comes from creating systems, building relationships, and helping others succeed alongside you. That lesson has shaped the direction of both my business and my future goals.

At the end of the day, I’ve learned that success is less about perfection and more about showing up consistently, staying committed to your vision, and being willing to evolve as you grow.
