Today we’d like to introduce you to Deonna Scott-Grimes.
Hi Deonna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
When I was laid off from my corporate job in 2023, I went into a quick panic because I didn’t know what to do. My now husband knew I wanted to become a social media manager so he fully encouraged me to go full force into it. What started as social media management quickly turned into content creation and that’s where I flourished for 2.5 years. However, at the start of this year, I noticed a shift in how I approached my clients — my focus was no longer just on what to create but really making sure their whole brand made sense for the content we were about to create. I wanted to have more of a say in how their brand operated to ensure our efforts weren’t being wasted.
After taking a step back, I realized that I was stepping into a more strategic role versus just the executer. What mattered most to me was making sure founders and brands were communicating their message clearly BEFORE worrying about the marketing. When I reflected on if this was the right lane for me, I noticed I was doing it all along just under a different title. With my content creation, I focused heavily on what the client was trying to say instead just making sure the content looked great.
With this shift, I feel more clear on where my own brand was headed and I’m excited to help founders and coaches grow to the next level as well.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely was not a smooth road. A lot of imposter syndrome, feeling like I don’t belong, feeling unseen in a growing industry and really recognizing my worth. I went back to the drawing board several times trying to be more digestible for my audience and appeal to everyone. I also found myself comparing myself to other people in my industry and questioned if I was even good at my job. A lot of “no’s” and “let’s circle back” and very few yes’s. I’m very grateful my consistent clients though as I was able to really grow and learn more.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a rebrand strategist that focuses on helping coaches and entrepreneurs reposition their brand with purpose. A lot of people hear rebrand and immediately think of a new logo, new colors and a brand new website. While that’s a part of a rebrand, that’s not the whole piece. Without a solid brand foundation and repositioning that aligns with your growth, the aesthetics won’t change much.
I gained this knowledge from being a social media manager. Many people I’d chat with (or even worked with) stated they needed a social media person as part of their rebrand but what they really needed was a brand foundation that communicated how they needed to show up so the social media manager had some direction.
I’m very proud of the work I’ve done with my clients. Once we were clear on their positioning, I was able to build out a social media marketing plan and saw great results: an increase of 400+ followers in 40 days and building a social strategy that generated $91,000 for a $300K launch in 60 days.
What makes you happy?
In business, seeing visible results from the strategy I created and seeing my clients happy that we were able to succeed in a goal that set out. My brain is naturally strategic and I used to think it was a bad thing growing up but now seeing the results of the way I think? One of the most satisfying things in life.
