Inspiring Conversations with Melissa Rideout of Yaya’s Gardenland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Rideout.

Hi Melissa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey to creating Yaya’s Gardenland started with a simple love for plants and the joy they bring to people. Like many plant lovers, I began by caring for plants in my own home and sharing that passion with friends and family. Over time, what started as a hobby grew into something much bigger.

I’ve spent much of my career working in healthcare, helping people in a different way, but I always felt drawn to creating beautiful, welcoming spaces through plants. Plants have a unique ability to bring comfort, improve moods, and make people feel connected to nature. I wanted to share that feeling with others.

That passion led me to start Yaya’s Gardenland, a small business focused on houseplants, plant education, workshops, and plant care services. My goal has always been to make plants approachable and enjoyable for everyone, whether they’re experienced plant collectors or bringing home their very first plant.

Today, Yaya’s Gardenland continues to grow through community partnerships, pop-up events, terrarium workshops, plant installations, and plant maintenance services for homes and businesses. I love helping people create spaces filled with life and greenery while building connections within the community.

As a wife, mother, grandmother, healthcare professional, and entrepreneur, starting a business in my mid-40s has taught me that it’s never too late to pursue something you’re passionate about. The journey hasn’t always been easy, but it has been incredibly rewarding.

My vision for Yaya’s Gardenland is to continue growing a business that inspires creativity, community, and a love of plants. I want every customer to feel the same joy and sense of wonder that plants have brought into my own life. After all, at Yaya’s Gardenland, “Where Whimsy Grows” is more than a tagline—it’s the heart of everything we do.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has taught me something valuable. One of the biggest obstacles has been building a business while working full-time in healthcare and balancing family responsibilities. Like many small business owners, I’ve had to learn how to wear multiple hats—plant buyer, marketer, accountant, event planner, social media manager, and customer service representative—all at the same time.

Another challenge has been overcoming self-doubt. Starting a business later in life can be intimidating. There were times when I questioned whether I was making the right decisions or whether I could successfully grow something from the ground up. I’ve learned that growth happens when you’re willing to step outside your comfort zone and keep moving forward, even when you don’t have all the answers.

Running a plant business also comes with unique challenges. Plants are living things, and they don’t always cooperate with your plans. Managing inventory, dealing with seasonal changes, and ensuring plants stay healthy while growing the business takes constant attention and care.
Building brand awareness has been another learning experience. Yaya’s Gardenland started with a love for plants, but I quickly realized that running a successful business requires building relationships, networking, creating partnerships, and consistently showing up for your community. Every pop-up event, workshop, and collaboration has helped me grow both personally and professionally.

Looking back, I wouldn’t change the journey. The challenges have made me more resilient, more confident, and more appreciative of every milestone. They’ve also reinforced why I started Yaya’s Gardenland in the first place—to bring a little more beauty, joy, and connection into people’s lives through plants.

As you know, we’re big fans of Yaya’s Gardenland. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Yaya’s Gardenland is a plant business built around the belief that plants have the power to bring beauty, joy, and connection into people’s lives. What started as a personal passion for houseplants has grown into a business focused on helping people create spaces they love through plants, creativity, and education.

We offer a variety of houseplants, plant gifts, terrarium workshops, plant consultations, installations, and plant maintenance services for both homes and businesses. Whether someone is an experienced plant collector or buying their very first plant, my goal is to make plant ownership approachable, enjoyable, and rewarding.

What sets Yaya’s Gardenland apart is the experience and personal connection behind everything we do. I don’t just sell plants—I help people find the right plants for their lifestyle and provide the guidance they need to help them thrive. I love teaching others through workshops, sharing plant care knowledge, and helping people build confidence as plant parents.

Our brand is rooted in a whimsical, cottage-inspired aesthetic that reflects the joy and wonder plants bring into everyday life. From creative displays and workshops to community partnerships and local pop-up events, I strive to create experiences that are welcoming, inspiring, and memorable.

One of the things I’m most proud of is the relationships that have grown through Yaya’s Gardenland. Seeing customers return, watching their confidence grow, and helping local businesses bring more greenery into their spaces has been incredibly rewarding.

At the heart of everything we do is our motto: “Where Whimsy Grows.” It’s a reminder that plants aren’t just decorations—they’re a way to create beauty, spark creativity, and bring a little more happiness into our daily lives.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
One of my favorite things about owning Yaya’s Gardenland is building relationships within the community, so I always welcome opportunities to connect and collaborate.

People can work with me in several ways. I offer houseplants, plant gifts, plant consultations, plant installations, and ongoing plant maintenance services for homes, offices, and businesses. I also host terrarium workshops and plant-focused events that are perfect for team-building activities, community gatherings, and special occasions.

I’m always interested in partnering with local businesses, coffee shops, boutiques, salons, wellness spaces, and community organizations that want to incorporate plants into their environments or create unique experiences for their customers. I love finding creative ways to bring people together through plants.

The best way to support Yaya’s Gardenland is by shopping small, attending events, sharing our posts on social media, recommending us to friends and family, and following along on our journey. Every share, referral, and purchase helps support a local woman-owned small business and allows me to continue doing what I love. You can find my plants at the Fort Worth Barbershop.

Most importantly, I want people to know that Yaya’s Gardenland is about more than plants. It’s about creating spaces that inspire joy, creativity, and connection. If you have an idea for a collaboration or are looking for help bringing more greenery into your home or business, I’d love to hear from you.
