Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Pham.
Hi Brian, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I first started back in early 2023 as both a DJ and event promotion manager for nightlife events in Carrollton. In April 2023, I began the party brand called Abyss Entertainment (IG: @abyss.tx) with my friend and business partner Joseph Nguyen.
At that time, I was driven by my love for music—specifically Hip-Hop and RnB—to create a fun lively community of events in DFW. Inspired by many events I’ve experienced from major cities like NYC, Atlanta and LA, I began to start my own brand of events to bring the first one’s to the Asian American community in DFW. At Abyss, my business partner (Joseph) and I ran ILYX, which was a Y2K inspired event taking place across several venues like Yashi Lounge, Pochakaya, and ChiChi. Starting a business wasn’t easy at first, but having worked in Finance, I was able to help lead the business to new heights.
As someone with a strong music background in (doing Hip-Hop and Urban Dance since high school), I started to pickup on DJing in 2022. Being a strong appreciator in all types of music, I didn’t want to limit myself to one genre. So I play Open-Format style of DJing, playing a range of Hip-Hop, RnB, Jersey Club, House, and Pop. My goal one day is to open up for big name shows like YG, Blxst, or Shoreline Mafia.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not always. Running a business in my mid 20’s, I ran into a lot of mistakes.
Sometimes events didn’t go off with a bang or hit profit margins like we expected. Sometimes, it was difficult to balance the time to plan events and practice DJing with the full-time corporate life.
Often needed to stay up late on weekdays, but working hybrid helped.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialist in event planning, from the creative directing all the way to the execution of the event.
As a nightlife event planner/promoter, I put together my ideas with a team (drawing in artistic and trendy themes) to create fun parties especially for the DFW Asian community.
Also being a DJ, I’m great at running my own DJ hosted parties with my current group Crush469.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My advice is in finding the right network is to don’t be afraid to be open/true of yourself to those that are more experienced or a big within a network. Starting from the bottom, do stay humble and appreciate those that have come out and support you for your first rodeo.
Always show love and respect, especially for the friends and family that have been there for you on your journey.
