Today we’d like to introduce you to Derrick Morgan Jr..
Hi Derrick, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am originally from Indianapolis, Indiana. I attended undergrad and law school at Indiana University, so a lot of my foundation was built in Indiana. After law school, I moved to Chicago. Chicago was a great experience professionally and personally, but I realized I was not built for those winters long term.
Around that same time, my mom moved to Dallas after getting married, so Dallas became a natural place for me to spend more time and eventually build deeper roots. I started Morgan Business Solutions during the pandemic, which was obviously a strange and uncertain time to launch a business. That period also pushed a lot of entrepreneurs to take their brands seriously. People were starting businesses, online stores, clothing brands, beauty brands, entertainment brands, consulting businesses, and they needed help protecting what they were building.
That is really where my firm started to grow. I focused on trademark law because I saw a clear need for plain-English legal help for entrepreneurs who did not always have access to traditional law firms. The business started booming quickly, and I just kept putting systems in place, learning, improving, and serving more clients.
Eventually, I moved to Mexico City, which gave me the warm weather and new environment I was looking for while still allowing me to serve clients throughout the United States and internationally. Today, I split my time between Dallas and Mexico City. Dallas has become an important business home for me, my law firm is based in Uptown, and a major part of my outreach is focused on helping entrepreneurs and business owners in Texas. It has been a great city for entrepreneurs, creatives, and professionals who are building something real.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, but I do not think anything meaningful is ever really a smooth road.
Overcoming the obstacles of my childhood was not a smooth road, but I would not change it. It teaches you how to get your hands dirty, and figure out how to do more with less. It teaches you how to figure things out without waiting for someone to come save you. That has applied to every stage of my life, from childhood to law school to building my firm.
One thing people do not always prepare you for when you grow up in the inner city is how often you may feel like you do not fit in, even after earning your way into the same rooms as everyone else. As an adolescent, law school, and professional environments, you may share the same credentials on paper. But your background, life experience, financial situation, cultural reference points, and support system can be completely different.
That can be challenging to navigate. Sometimes you spend a lot of energy trying to fit into spaces that were not built with you in mind. I realized that instead of trying to force myself into a specific work culture, I could build my own. I could create my own lane, my own brand, my own way of practicing law, and my own way of serving clients.
That mindset is a big part of why I became an entrepreneur. I did not want to wait for permission. I did not want to depend on someone else seeing my value. I wanted to build something where the work could speak for itself.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Morgan Business Solutions?
Morgan Business Solutions is a trademark law firm that helps entrepreneurs, creators, startups, and business owners protect their brands. We handle trademark searches, applications, office action responses, brand protection strategy, and other trademark-related services.
We have worked with several thousands of clothing brands, beauty brands, hair care companies, entertainment brands, coaches, consultants, restaurants, e-commerce businesses, and entrepreneurs. A big part of our work is helping people understand that a brand is more than a logo or a name. It is an asset. If you are building a business around a name, you need to know whether you can legally use it, protect it, and stop others from copying it.
What sets my firm apart is that we make the trademark process understandable. A lot of law firms make the process feel intimidating or overly complicated. I have always tried to explain things in plain English, give clients realistic expectations, and help them make informed decisions.
I also built my firm from the ground up. I did not have a mentor or a built-in support system. I just put my head down, taught myself how to build the systems, learned the business side, improved the client experience, and kept going.
I think strong entrepreneurs are not always the people with the most credentials or the perfect plan. A lot of times, they are the people who move the fastest, stay the most consistent, and are relentless about figuring things out. That was my approach. Failure was not an option. I did not have some safety net or fallback plan, so I had to make it work.
Brand-wise, I am most proud that we have been able to serve thousands of entrepreneurs across the U.S. and around the world. We have helped protect brands in many different industries, from small local businesses to fast-growing online brands. I am also proud that our clients often say the process felt clear, organized, and less stressful than they expected.
For readers who are building a business, my message is simple: do not wait until your brand gets popular to think about protection. The best time to protect a brand is before you have a major problem. If you are investing money into packaging, a website, social media, ads, inventory, or content, you should also be thinking about whether the name you are building around can actually be protected.
What matters most to you? Why?
Freedom.
Entrepreneurship can be lonely, stressful, and unpredictable, but freedom is everything to me. My entire business plan is to do what I want, when I want, with whom I want, where I want, and do very little of what I dislike.
I have worked extremely hard to build my business, but I do not want to be in hustle mode forever. I want to build a business that gives me back my time, not just money. I am working daily to optimize my systems and team so I have more time to live and not just work.
Beyond practicing law, I want the freedom to build meaningful projects, coach and mentor others, give back, and be fully present in my own life. For me, success also means creating financial independence and the option to step back from the day-to-day demands of work much earlier than most people assume is possible.
I love building businesses, but the goal is not to work endlessly. The goal is to build something strong enough to create choices. That is what freedom means to me.
