Life & Work with Karol Acosta of Dallas-Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karol Acosta.

Hi Karol, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in the Southside area of Fort Worth. My parents both come from San Luis Potosi, Mexico. I’ve always had the passion to create since I was young. I didn’t go to college after I graduated HS. I was pretty much going through the motions of life until my abuelo on my papa’s side passed away in Nov 2020. That turned my life around and I was motivated to do more with myself than staying in my art room, handing out my artwork for free or taking a commission for a friend here and there. In Feb 2021 I started an art account on social media and began my journey as an LLC artist. It took a lot of research and money but I got myself an LLC to sell my work. From doing market pops ups, to hosting craft nights, to creating private art parties, here I am 5 years later and I just hit 1k followers on Instagram!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The process of becoming an LLC did involve research and I learned a lot about becoming a small business.
Money is always going to be an issue. You pay tax to become a small business and another tax for your property. Then there’s the whole vendor fee or submission fee if you want to apply to a pop up market or be part of a venue’s exhibition.
On top of that, all supplies are on you. So the beginning of the journey is definitely money draining.
Building connections as a person who doesn’t come out of their shell easily is difficult but I did spend hours on social media following vendors, Dj’s, local businesses, and local artists to build my profile and get a sense of the art community.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I consider myself a mixed media artist. My work involves one or a mix of these themes: feminity, nature, or space. I mostly work with acrylic paints but I do use other materials such as color pencils, watercolor, paint markers, permanent markers, etc. I not only paint, I also create small oddities, collages, drawings, and upcycle clothing. My husband creates the jewelry. He helps me create the keychains.
I specialize in surreal art. I enjoy using my imagination to the fullest. I absolutely enjoy creating spacial beings and making plants into human anatomy. People seem to like the ones I make called Mini Cake Galaxy Monsters. I make a theme with each set and use whipped clay to make the icing.
Im proud of all my creations! The artwork I love the most I will keep for myself, which has happened only a few times.
What sets me apart? I create whatever I want and I do not stay quiet about what I see within the art community. My bluntness may be too much for others but I consider it part of my personality.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Staying true to myself.
I do not listen to strangers advice that I should make more of this or that, or that I should charge more.
I do not vend just anywhere. I look into the venue, what they represent, and I see how much is being charged.
