Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Steven Nguyen.
Hi Dr. Steven, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into dentistry has been shaped by a mix of hard work, curiosity, and a genuine desire to help people feel more confident in their health and their smile. I knew I wanted to build something that felt different from the typical dental experience, something more personal, modern, and patient-centered. That eventually led me to open MDRN Dental Studio in McKinney.
Starting a practice from the ground up has been one of the most challenging and rewarding things I’ve ever done. There are so many moving parts beyond dentistry itself, including building a team, creating systems, designing the patient experience, and making sure every detail reflects the standard of care we want to provide. But it has also given me the opportunity to create an environment that truly aligns with my values.
At MDRN Dental Studio, my goal is to make patients feel heard, respected, and comfortable. Dentistry can be intimidating for a lot of people, so we try to slow things down, explain things clearly, and make the experience feel less stressful. I want patients to feel like they are part of the decision-making process, not just being told what to do.
Another important part of my journey has been my commitment to continuing education. Dentistry is constantly evolving, and I never want to become complacent or practice a certain way simply because “that’s how it has always been done.” I’ve invested a lot of time into advanced training, CE, and learning from clinicians I respect so I can keep improving and provide the best care possible for my patients. To me, being a good dentist means staying humble, staying curious, and always looking for ways to make treatment more comfortable, more predictable, and more personalized.
What I’m most proud of is creating a practice where clinical quality and patient experience both matter. We use modern technology, thoughtful treatment planning, and a personalized approach to help patients feel confident in their care. Whether someone is coming in for a routine visit, cosmetic treatment, clear aligners, or more complex dental work, I want them to feel like they are in a place that truly cares about the details.
Opening MDRN Dental Studio has taught me a lot about patience, resilience, and trusting the process. There have definitely been challenges, but every step has reinforced why I started. I wanted to build a practice where people feel comfortable, where the dentistry is done with intention, and where patients know they are being treated like people, not just appointments on a schedule.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Has it been a smooth road? Not exactly, but I don’t think building anything meaningful ever is.
Opening MDRN Dental Studio has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve done, but it has also come with a lot of challenges. When you start a practice from the ground up, you quickly realize that being a dentist is only one part of the job. You also have to learn how to build systems, lead a team, manage the business side, create a patient experience, and make decisions every day that affect the future of the practice.
One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to balance everything while still staying focused on the reason I started in the first place, which is taking great care of patients. There are long days, unexpected problems, and moments where you have to figure things out as you go. It can be stressful, but it also forces you to grow.
Another challenge has been building awareness as a new practice. Patients have a lot of options, so earning trust takes time. We have had to be intentional about showing people who we are, what we value, and why our approach to dentistry is different. That means focusing on consistency, patient experience, and doing the little things well every single day.
There have also been the normal struggles that come with entrepreneurship, including uncertainty, pressure, and the feeling that there is always something more to improve. But I think those challenges have made me more resilient and more thoughtful as both a clinician and a practice owner.
Overall, the road has not been perfectly smooth, but I’m grateful for that. The difficult parts have taught me patience, humility, and the importance of trusting the process. Every challenge has helped shape MDRN Dental Studio into the kind of practice I originally hoped to build.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about MDRN Dental Studio?
MDRN Dental Studio is a modern dental practice in McKinney, Texas, built around the idea that dentistry should feel more personal, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed. I wanted to create a practice where patients feel heard, where treatment is explained clearly, and where the experience feels less intimidating than what many people expect from a dental office.
We provide comprehensive dental care, including preventive care, restorative dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, clear aligner therapy, whitening, crowns, implants, emergency visits, and treatment planning for more complex cases. Our goal is to meet patients where they are, whether they are coming in for a routine cleaning, wanting to improve their smile, or trying to get back on track after avoiding the dentist for years.
One thing we are known for is taking the time to explain things. I never want patients to feel rushed or confused about their options. We use modern technology, including digital scanning and visual tools, to help patients better understand what is going on and why certain treatment may be recommended. I think that level of transparency helps build trust and makes patients feel more confident in their decisions.
What sets MDRN Dental Studio apart is the combination of clinical detail and patient experience. We care about the quality of the dentistry, but we also care about how people feel while they are here. From the design of the space to the way we communicate, every part of the practice was built intentionally. We want the office to feel calm, modern, and welcoming, not cold or overwhelming.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that MDRN Dental Studio feels true to who we are. It is clean and modern, but still warm and human. The brand is not just about looking polished. It reflects how we want patients to feel: comfortable, respected, and cared for. I’m proud that we have created a practice that feels different without losing sight of what matters most, which is doing right by the patient.
What I want readers to know is that MDRN Dental Studio is here for people who want thoughtful, personalized dental care. Whether someone is nervous, busy, looking for a new dental home, or ready to make a change in their smile, our goal is to make the process feel clear, comfortable, and tailored to them. We are still growing, but we are building something with intention, and I’m proud of the experience we are creating for our patients.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I would not say I’m reckless with risk, but I do think meaningful growth usually requires stepping into some level of uncertainty. For me, risk is not about making impulsive decisions. It is about being willing to bet on yourself when the vision matters enough, while still doing the work to prepare as much as possible.
Opening MDRN Dental Studio was definitely the biggest risk I have taken professionally. Starting a dental practice from the ground up comes with a lot of uncertainty. There is the financial risk, the pressure of building a team, the challenge of earning patients’ trust, and the responsibility of making countless decisions before you know exactly how everything will turn out. It would have been easier and safer to stay on a more predictable path, but I knew I wanted to create something that reflected the way I believe dentistry should be practiced.
The way I think about risk has changed over time. I used to think risk meant taking a big leap and hoping it worked out. Now I see it more as a calculated decision. You gather information, prepare as much as you can, surround yourself with the right people, and then accept that you will never have complete certainty. At some point, you have to move forward.
I also think avoiding risk can become its own kind of risk. If I had waited until everything felt perfect, I probably never would have opened the practice. There is always a reason to wait, and there is always something you could improve before starting. But I realized that if I wanted to build the kind of patient experience and practice culture I cared about, I had to be willing to take that step.
For me, risk has played a major role in my growth. It has forced me to become more resilient, more intentional, and more comfortable with problem-solving. Not every part of the journey has been easy, but taking that risk gave me the opportunity to build MDRN Dental Studio and create something I’m genuinely proud of.
