Inspiring Conversations with Dorkas Arroyo of Sweet Projects

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dorkas Arroyo.

Hi Dorkas, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
About Me – My Story
I founded Sweet Projects in 2009, but my journey began a little earlier—when I made chocolate pops for my sister’s wedding. What started as a simple favor quickly became a passion. I fell in love with the creativity, the precision, and the joy that comes from making something beautiful with your hands. That moment opened the door to a world I didn’t know I needed.

From there, I immersed myself in learning. I took countless classes to refine my skills, expanding from chocolate pops to cakes, cookies, and a wide variety of desserts. Over the years, I’ve developed and perfected recipes and techniques that allow me to create treats that are not only delicious but also visually elegant. Every dessert I make carries a blend of creativity, discipline, and heart.

Teaching has become one of the most meaningful parts of my journey. I love sharing my craft through hands‑on cookie‑decorating classes that inspire creativity and bring people together. These classes have allowed me to connect with my community in a deeper way—helping others discover their artistic side while creating sweet memories.

I also participate in local vendor fairs, where I showcase seasonal treats, cookie kits, paint‑your‑own cookies, and other Sweet Projects favorites. Being part of these events has helped me grow both personally and professionally, and it’s given me the opportunity to meet incredible people who support and believe in small businesses.

Sweet Projects has grown with me, and every chapter of my story is tied to the joy of creating, teaching, and connecting through desserts.

Sweet Projects specializes in unique desserts that combine bold flavors, creative presentation, and simple yet elegant designs. Whether you’re planning a party, celebrating a milestone, attending a class, or simply treating yourself, Sweet Projects offers desserts that make any occasion unforgettable.

From custom cookies and seasonal treats to hands‑on decorating classes, Sweet Projects is all about bringing creativity to life. My goal is to create desserts that not only taste amazing but also become part of the memories people cherish—whether it’s a beautifully crafted cookie at a baby shower or a fun decorating class shared with friends.

If you want to bring something special to your next gathering, Sweet Projects is here to help you stand out with desserts that are crafted with care, creativity, and a whole lot of heart.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has definitely not been smooth—there have been plenty of growing pains along the way. When I started, everything was new. I had to develop recipes from scratch, learn new techniques, and figure out how to work with customers in a way that felt natural and professional. Owning a small business means becoming a jack‑of‑all‑trades overnight. You’re not just the baker—you’re also the marketing director, the content creator, the financial manager, the customer service department, and the problem‑solver for anything that comes your way.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of building a support system. For many years, I did everything myself—every cookie, every class, every setup, every teardown. Today, I still do all the baking and decorating, but I’ve started training an assistant to help with packaging, organizing, and setting up at vendor fairs. Learning to outsource has been a huge step forward. It not only helps me manage my workload, but it also supports other small businesses and creates opportunities for collaboration.

Eighteen years have flown by, and each season brings new challenges. But every challenge has pushed me to grow, refine my craft, and become more confident in the business I’ve built. The journey hasn’t been easy, but it has been incredibly rewarding.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Sweet Projects is a dessert business built on creativity, craftsmanship, and connection. I specialize in custom cookies, seasonal treats, and hands‑on cookie‑decorating classes that bring people together. My style blends bold flavors with simple, elegant designs—desserts that are beautiful without being overly complicated, and delicious without sacrificing artistry.

What truly sets Sweet Projects apart is the combination of quality, consistency, and heart. Every dessert is baked and decorated by me, using recipes I’ve developed and refined over the past 18 years. I’m known for clean designs, balanced flavors, and a personal touch that makes each order feel special. Whether it’s a custom set for a celebration, a seasonal cookie kit, or a class full of new decorators discovering their creativity, I want every experience to feel memorable.

I’m also proud of the community Sweet Projects has helped build. Through classes, vendor fairs, and collaborations with other small businesses, I’ve created a space where people can learn, connect, and support one another. My brand isn’t just about desserts—it’s about creativity, education, and shared joy.

What I want readers to know is that Sweet Projects is more than a bakery. It’s a place where artistry meets hospitality. Whether you’re planning a party, attending a class, or simply treating yourself, my goal is to offer desserts and experiences that make your occasion unforgettable. Every cookie, every class, and every event is crafted with care, intention, and a whole lot of love.

How do you think about luck?
I’m not sure I’d call it luck—at least not in the traditional sense. I believe you create your own path. I’ve always been a go‑getter. If I want something, I work for it. I fight for it. I stay focused until the goal is reached. That mindset has carried me through every chapter of Sweet Projects.

Of course, life happens to all of us. There are moments when things don’t go as planned, when challenges show up unexpectedly, or when circumstances force you to pivot. I’ve experienced those moments too. But I’ve learned that those shifts aren’t signs to give up—they’re signs to adjust, grow, and move forward.

If anything, the “luck” in my journey has come from staying open to new opportunities, meeting the right people at the right time, and trusting that hard work eventually aligns with the doors meant for you. I don’t rely on luck, but I do believe that when you show up consistently, stay committed, and keep pushing, good things find their way to you.
