Meet The 12th House of The 12th House

Today we’d like to introduce you to The 12th House.

Hi The 12th House, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Four years ago, Lea Roache and Monica Dyess-Martinez met in a pottery class. They soon discovered they shared the same dream: to one day open a coffee shop. Knowing every dream starts with a first step, they launched The 12th House as a beverage cart.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a business is never easy. Their first cart was custom-built to match their wildest dreams, but it quickly became clear that even when you get exactly what you envisioned, you don’t truly know how it’ll work until it’s out in the real world. Weighing nearly 600 pounds, it featured a refrigerator that was too small, a commercial ice bin that took up valuable space, and a cold brew keg that seemed to stop working every other event. To top it all off, the wheels broke during their very first event.

Instead of giving up, they pivoted. They traded the original cart for a collapsible one that didn’t require a trailer and could be assembled inside event spaces. Rather than seeing obstacles as failures, they saw them as an opportunity to learn and build something even better.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
They’re dubbed a beverage cart because they create a wide array of bevs: cold brew, matcha, lemonade, tea, and refreshers all flavored with homemade syrups and purée. Inspired by astrology and the changing of seasons, their menu changes as often as the moon changes shape.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
The best part of what we do is watching people fall in love with our drinks. There’s nothing better than hearing a returning customer say they’ve been dreaming about our banana matcha (Jupiter) or came back just for their favorite drink. Those are the moments we fantasized about long before we ever served our first cup. We leave every event smiling, filled with gratitude that we get to create something that brings people joy.
