Hidden Gems: Meet Karolyna Olmedo Rocha of Luna y Mar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karolyna Olmedo Rocha.

Hi Karolyna, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up in Southern California, being the daughter of immigrant parents afforded me a unique perspective. Regular visits to Mexico during the summer months strengthened my bond with my cultural roots. After moving to San Antonio and then Dallas, I developed a profound respect for Mexico’s vibrant cultural legacy. This newfound respect inspired me to create eco-friendly candles in vessels made from sustainable materials sourced in Tonala and Puebla. My desire for uniqueness led me to create my own designs. This journey eventually brought me to Oaxaca, where I collaborated with master artisans, resulting in a diverse collection of pottery, with roughly 90% of the pieces being my own creative designs.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We’ve encountered our fair share of hurdles, but we’ve used each setback as a spring board for improvement. By learning from our mistakes, we’ve enhanced our client relationships, streamlined our shipping operations, and optimize our inventory management. This journey has been a catalyst for growth, and we are excited to see what the future holds.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Luna y Mar ?
Our handmade, one of a kind pieces transports a fragment of Mexico into the heart of people’s homes. As we like to say, “Un Pedacito de Mexico”

I think our unique strength lies in the relationship we have cultivated with our customers. As well, as the customer service that we provide. And that’s what I am most proud of brand wise.

Since we partner with skilled artisans from various regions of Mexico. If a specific design is desired, we will source the perfect artisan to create it via a custom order.

What are your plans for the future?
The biggest change we are planning for is growing our footprint.
We are currently looking at scaling our production, digital presence and physical reach so we can serve a broader audience. What I’m looking forward to most is maintaining the personal, small business touch that our loyal customers appreciate even as our community gets bigger.
