Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikkie Hunter.
Hi Nikkie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I proudly serve as the Arlington City Councilwoman for District 3 while also working full-time in healthcare leadership and marketing. My passion is serving people, building stronger communities, and creating opportunities that make a lasting impact.
I am the founder of the annual Breast Cancer Awareness Health Fair and host Women’s Empowerment Luncheons that bring women together to network, grow, and inspire one another. I enjoy connecting residents with valuable resources, supporting local nonprofits and small businesses, and advocating for safe neighborhoods and thriving communities.
Through my work in public service, healthcare, and community leadership, I strive to lead with integrity, compassion, and action. My mission is simple: to serve others, empower people to reach their full potential, and leave every community better than I found it.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many people in leadership, I’ve faced my share of challenges and setbacks. Growing up, I was a quiet and shy child who was often underestimated. Entering public service meant learning to navigate criticism, negativity, and the reality that not everyone will support your success.
As a woman in leadership, I’ve also experienced moments where my voice was questioned or dismissed in ways that my male counterparts may not experience. Politics can be demanding and balancing a full-time career in healthcare leadership with the responsibilities of serving on the City Council has required discipline, sacrifice, and resilience.
I’ve also learned that not everyone who smiles at you has your best interests at heart. Along the way, I’ve faced disappointment, betrayal, and difficult decisions. But every challenge has made me stronger, wiser, and more determined to serve with integrity.
Those experiences have shaped the leader I am today. They have taught me to stay focused on my purpose, lead with compassion, and never allow obstacles or negativity to define my journey. Instead, I use them as motivation to continue making a positive difference in my community.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I created the Breast Cancer Awareness Health Fair because I saw a need in our community. Too many people were delaying preventive care or didn’t know where to find affordable health resources. I wanted to create an event that would remove barriers by bringing healthcare providers, screenings, education, and support together in one place—and at no cost to attendees.
As someone who works in healthcare and serves in public office, I understand that early detection saves lives. Breast cancer affects not only individuals but entire families, and I wanted to make sure our community had access to information, resources, and screenings that could make a difference.
The health fair is about more than breast cancer. It’s about empowering people to take charge of their health, connecting them with local healthcare providers, and encouraging preventive care. My goal has always been to ensure that everyone, regardless of their background or financial situation has access to life-saving resources.
What started as an idea has grown into an annual community event that brings together hospitals, healthcare organizations, nonprofits, and volunteers who share the same mission: improving lives through education, awareness, and early detection. Seeing lives impacted and knowing that someone may receive a life-saving screening because of this event is what continues to inspire me each year.
What sets me apart is that I bridge the worlds of healthcare, public service, and community leadership. I don’t just identify problems; I work collaboratively to find solutions. I lead with compassion, integrity, and authenticity, and I genuinely care about the people I serve. Whether I’m in City Hall, at a community event, or in my healthcare career, my mission remains the same: to empower others, strengthen communities, and leave every place better than I found it.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I would encourage everyone to remember that your story doesn’t have to be perfect to make an impact. Every challenge you face can become part of your purpose if you choose to keep moving forward.
For women especially, know your worth. Don’t let anyone define your value or limit your potential. If there’s not a seat at the table, build your own. Stay true to who you are, lead with integrity, and never be afraid to use your voice to make a difference.
I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve my community, and I hope my journey inspires others to get involved, give back, and realize that one person truly can make a difference. Leadership isn’t about recognition, it’s about service. If we all commit to serving others with compassion and purpose, we can create stronger, healthier, and more connected communities for generations to come.
