Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacqueline Placido.
Jacqueline, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I became a personal stylist at Nordstrom in Boston, MA. I was the first stylist hired when Nordstrom opened its doors on the East Coast in Natick, MA. I garnered a fabulous clientele and decided to pursue my career further in Dallas, TX where I met some of my favorite clients that I continue to work with today!
After living in Dallas for 5 years, I really wanted to pursue my dream of being a stylist in NYC, so I moved there with another stylist/friend Jeanette Antillon who styles professional athletes.
Once we landed in NYC, we both ended up working at the Saks on 5th Avenue. It was an eye opening experience to see how the NY women shop compared to Dallas women, meaning they only have so much time before having to get back to work or onto the next store. That’s saying, “A New York Minute” is so true! Time is money over there!
After again, living in someplace new, and bearing 5 winters, I moved to Los Angeles for the warmer weather and a change of pace.
I have been laid off twice and had been bouncing around management roles until this year.
I’m now my own boss and work as a stylist full time! It was time. I make more money doing what I do now and I live my job!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were a couple mishaps, but I learn from my mistakes and everyone has to go through the trial and error process until they find what timelines work best for them and what to charge for their work, be it hourly or commissioned based.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Im a personal shopper based in Los Angeles but frequently travel to Dallas, TX, and Boston, MA for my clients every season.
I specialize in packing for trips, shipping seasonally for clients, switching out Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter wardrobes, and purging closets.
I’m known for dressing my clients in whatever season they’re in, not just weather-wise but in whatever state of life they’re in.
I’m actually headed to Dallas in July to assist one of my favorite clients purge her closet and make new looks for her new life, now that both of her children have left the nest and she has a slower paced life but still dresses up. Most of my clients find that’s the toughest look to plan out, but I’ll get her together!
What I’m most proud of is that all of my clients are also my friends/family. I love to catching up with them and their lives which actually helps me figure out what pieces to use when making looks for them for the upcoming seasons.
What sets me apart is I’m not sensitive when my clients tell me they will not wear certain silhouettes. I’m also patient and do push them when necessary when I present looks and for the most part they are shocked when they see, my picks do in fact work for their body type. I always get comments like, “I would’ve never thought to put these pieces together!”, or “How do you remember what’s in my closet?!”.
I always find that part both heartwarming and hilarious! Lol. It’s part of being a creative/stylist I think, we have great memories about pieces we’ve shopped for, when it comes to our clients.
How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happy?… Hmmm, my friends and family of course but honestly, my job. I do not consider it work, honestly. I love the hunt of shopping and finding just the right pieces for my clients.
