Today we’d like to introduce you to Rogelio Mendoza.
Rogelio, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in Oakcliff in Dallas, Tx. I bounced around a lot as a kid going to a different school every year until 6th grade. The only way I knew how to make friends was to be funny. My parents drove trucks so I was mostly raised by my grandparents from Mexico. My parents were comedy fans. When they were around we would watch stand up specials or we would listen on Sirius xm on the road. Ive always had admiration for stand up. I never thought I would actually go up. I attended 8 open mics at Dallas Comedy Club in 2024 before ever going on stage. I’ve been doing comedy for 2 years and 2 months now. It has been an amazing experience from the people to the opportunities. It’s taught me a lot. I’ve become a better person and comic. I couldn’t imagine my life without it now.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not. I get so nervous right before going on sometime I shake while I talk. Especially when trying new material. It’s a learning curve to get used to putting your thoughts out there that you worked on for hours and getting absolutely no laughs. There are a few things you can do help sharpen your skill but getting on stage is the only way to get better. The key is consistency. There are no shortcuts to becoming a comic. Everyone i have met has proved that. We all have a different start, middle and end. It’s definitely a bumpy journey. I’m only 2 years in but still learning everyday.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a dallas based comic born in raised in the heart of the city. I do everything I do for my family. I get to show my kids it’s never too late to chase a dream. I pour a lot of myself into being a comedian. Hitting mics, writing, studying tapes, making connections. The grind of it the hustle is what makes it worth it when you get onstage an make room roar. When you can feel those laughs vibrating the room there’s nothing like it. That’s why I put so much pressure on myself to write better to rework bits and to make sure I’m putting in the work, so when I put my name down on list to work on my material. I don’t feel like I’m wasting time and space.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
While attending the open mics as just and audience member back in 2024. I began writing after attending my 6th mic. I honestly was just writing to with no intention whatsoever of ever getting on. I love comedy as an art i and definitely a fan first. I don’t know what made me start writing if it was just a curiosity thing or what. I was at my 8th open mic as an audience member. I was out on the patio with other comic who had recognized me from previous visits. They had asked me how long I had been doing comedy. I told them I wasn’t a comic just kinda here for the show. It sparked conversation as to why I wasn’t going up. 3 days later I signed up for the Wednesday mic.
