Conversations with Jose Gonzalez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Gonzalez.

Hi Jose, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My story is really one of family, perseverance, and discovering who I was meant to become. My parents sacrificed more than I could fully understand as a child to give me opportunities they never had. Looking back now, I realize how much courage and determination it took for them to build a new life for our family in the United States. Those sacrifices shaped the way I approach life and taught me that hard work isn’t something you do occasionally—it’s simply part of who you are.

My father, Mario, who has since passed away, worked in upholstery and showed me what it meant to take responsibility and lead by example. Although he wasn’t my biological father, he never treated me any differently. He taught me that being a father isn’t defined by blood but by love, commitment, and showing up every single day. My mother, Blanca, has always been one of the hardest-working people I’ve ever known. There were times she worked three jobs at DFW Airport just to provide for our family, and even today she continues to inspire me with her work ethic. Hard work truly runs through our veins.

Music entered my life at a very young age. I still remember hearing a neighbor across the street creating music on a keyboard with his window open. I worked up the courage to ask if I could play a few notes, and from that day on I fell in love with music. What started with a few keys on a keyboard grew into a lifelong passion.

Over the years, that passion has taken many forms. I began as a rapper, writing and recording my own music over beats I produced myself under the artist name J Gonzo, eventually releasing an album titled Self Produced. From there I produced music for other local artists, explored filmmaking, photography, and videography, and continued looking for new ways to tell stories through creativity.

Eventually, all of those experiences led me to DJing.

For me, El Vaquero Cowboy is much more than a stage name. It represents my life and everything that has shaped me. I was born in Mexico, but Texas embraced me and became home. I’ve always felt connected to both cultures, and I wanted a name that honored them equally. “Vaquero” reflects my Mexican heritage, while “Cowboy” represents the Texas roots that have become such a meaningful part of my identity. Together, they tell my story.

Today I have the privilege of bringing people together through music at weddings, quinceañeras, private events, and nightclubs. While every event is different, my goal is always the same: to create an atmosphere where people from every background feel welcome, celebrate together, and leave with memories they’ll never forget. Looking back, I realize that every chapter of my life—from my childhood to music production to filmmaking and now DJing—was preparing me for exactly where I am today.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but looking back, I wouldn’t change the journey because every challenge has helped shape who I am today.

Some of my earliest struggles began long before I ever thought about music or becoming a DJ. My family made tremendous sacrifices to build a life in the United States. As a young child, I experienced things I didn’t fully understand until I became an adult. My parents endured uncertainty and hardship because they believed there could be a better future for our family. Their resilience became the foundation of my own.

Growing up, I also struggled with my identity. I was often called “Mojo” because of the way I spoke Spanish. At the time, it felt like I didn’t completely fit into either world. Looking back, that experience taught me something valuable. Instead of letting others define me, I eventually chose my own identity. From J Gonzo to El Vaquero Cowboy, each name represents a different chapter of my life and my journey toward embracing both my Mexican heritage and my Texas roots.

Professionally, the road has been just as challenging. Music has always been my passion, but success didn’t happen overnight. I’ve reinvented myself several times—as a rapper, music producer, filmmaker, photographer, videographer, and now as a DJ. Every new chapter meant starting over, learning new skills, building relationships, and earning people’s trust from the ground up.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that talent alone isn’t enough. You have to be consistent, dependable, and willing to outwork yesterday’s version of yourself. There are countless hours people never see: practicing, preparing playlists, producing content, investing in equipment, networking, and constantly looking for ways to improve.

Today, I’m grateful for every obstacle I’ve faced because each one has taught me something that success alone never could. Those experiences have made me appreciate every opportunity, every client, every dance floor, and every chance I get to do what I love. If my story proves anything, it’s that where you begin doesn’t have to determine where you finish.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Today, I’m a bilingual DJ and MC, but I like to think of my work as much more than simply playing music. Whether I’m performing at a wedding, quinceañera, corporate event, private celebration, or nightclub, my job is to create an experience that brings people together.

One of the things I’m most proud of is that every chapter of my creative journey has led me to where I am today. As a rapper, I learned songwriting and rhythm. As a music producer, I learned how songs are built and how different sounds connect with people. Filmmaking and photography taught me how to tell stories and pay attention to the details that create memorable moments. Today, I get to bring all of those experiences together behind the DJ booth.

What I believe sets me apart isn’t simply that I’m bilingual—it’s that I genuinely understand both cultures because I’ve lived them. I was born in Monterrey, Mexico, and raised in Texas. I understand the traditions, music, and emotions that are important to Hispanic families, while also appreciating the culture and diversity that make Texas home. That’s exactly what El Vaquero Cowboy represents. It’s not just a name; it’s a reflection of who I am.

When I perform, my goal isn’t to impress people with technical skills or how many songs I know. It’s to read the room, understand the crowd, and create moments where everyone feels included. I love seeing grandparents dancing to a classic cumbia, parents singing along to songs they grew up with, and younger generations filling the dance floor when the music shifts. Those moments remind me why I chose this path.

If there’s one thing I hope people remember after an event, it isn’t my name. I hope they remember how they felt. I hope they remember laughing with family, celebrating with friends, and creating memories that will stay with them for years to come. Knowing that I was able to play a small part in those moments is what makes this work so meaningful to me.

Above everything else, I’m most proud that El Vaquero Cowboy has become a true reflection of my life. It represents my Mexican heritage, my Texas roots, my family’s sacrifices, and my belief that music has the unique ability to unite people regardless of where they come from or what language they speak.

How do you think about luck?
I’ve always believed that perspective shapes the way we view luck.

When I look back on my life, there were certainly moments that many people would call bad luck. My family faced tremendous obstacles immigrating to the United States. Growing up, there were times when I questioned where I belonged. I’ve had creative projects that didn’t go the way I hoped, opportunities that never materialized, and moments where I had to start over from scratch.

But with time, I’ve realized those experiences weren’t setbacks—they were lessons.

I’m a man of faith, and I truly believe God has guided my path even when I couldn’t see where it was leading. Looking back, many of the moments I once considered disappointments eventually prepared me for opportunities I couldn’t have imagined at the time.

The same has been true in my career. Every chapter taught me something different. Rap taught me how to tell stories. Producing taught me patience and attention to detail. Filmmaking and photography taught me how to see moments that others might overlook. My time serving in the U.S. Army taught me discipline, accountability, and resilience. Every experience, whether it felt like success or failure in the moment, contributed to the person and professional I’ve become.

If there has been any “good luck” in my life, I think it’s the people God has placed along my journey. My parents, who sacrificed so much for our family. The neighbor who let a curious little boy sit down at his keyboard. Mentors, friends, clients, and countless people who believed in me at different stages of my life. None of them probably realized the impact they were having, but each one helped shape my story.

So rather than seeing my life as a series of lucky or unlucky moments, I choose to see it as a journey filled with purpose. Every challenge strengthened me, every opportunity humbled me, and every chapter prepared me for the next. For that, I’m incredibly grateful.
