Today we’d like to introduce you to Roman Canoy.
Hi Roman, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Roman. A DFW native, Musician, Father of two, and DJ for 7 years. I started DJing not really intending for it to become serious. But today it has flourished into a full-time business!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Biggest obstacles are no instruction manual and the fact it takes a lot of time. But in the end, time and experience and the network that has been built… all of this becomes an asset and an advantage to me.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Today I specialize in weddings, and the fun part is, it can be for anybody from any background. Not only that, but with there being two sides of the family from the bride and groom, it can be an even more fun challenge to keep everyone engaged and dancing, especially if their respective backgrounds or cultures differ. I offer full service ranging from integrating musicians into the ceremony or reception, providing crystal clear wireless microphone or speaker solutions, and in particular bringing people together on the dance floor through music. I tell all my couples to be transparent with me in their preferences and favorite tracks. Then it’s up to me to tell their story.
My edge in my mixing style are the unique ways I tie songs together and the energy it transmits. Yes, there are highs and lows in the story telling but overall I would say I don’t let things get boring. Quick mixing and high energy are the name of the game.
I’m always digging into more genres, finding fresh ways to blend tracks, and with time sometimes I find myself catching onto new styles that were previously not my forte. Right now, for example, I find that funk and disco are really rubbing off on me. It is so universal, I can find a way to get nearly anyone to groove to it!
What were you like growing up?
When I was in middle school, I would have these wild urges to take electronics apart. I once hid the fact that I forced my Mom’s used Nokia phone open and could not put it back together. She later discovered her precious device shattered in pieces and I had to explain why I would do such a thing. Other times, it would be a used PDA, a video game console, or anything with a touch screen. I just desperately wanted to see what was on the inside so I could attempt to interpret how it was supposed to work.
My mom also nick-named me “Curious George” when I was a child. I find that same curiosity drives me to try things I have never done before.
When I would visit blockbuster, I would try out any first-person shooter or racing games. I was in the Boy Scouts. I played the trumpet for 8 years and was part of the marching and jazz bands.
