Today we’d like to introduce you to Canon Herring.
Hi Canon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started learning music at a very young age and am blessed to come from a musical family. As I grew up, my love for music grew with me. It became more than a hobby; it became a passion and a calling. I didn’t want to do music only as a career, I knew I was called to make it my personal ministry too. Where I am today is only because of the goodness of God in my life. Honoring God in my film composing as well as my worship music has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. I have put a lot of work into music as a business, but I always try to remember who’s strength and purpose I operate out of. I believe that I will only go as far and be as successful as God allows me to. The Bible says, “Delight yourselves in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.” As long as I stay submitted, follow the peace of Jesus, and delight myself in the Lord, I know music as my personal ministry will be fruitful.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Some of the biggest challenges have been issues of the heart and mind, not logistical ones. Of course, I have faced hard deadlines, broken music gear and difficult clients, but those things are nothing compared to the battles in my mind. I struggles as an overthinker. That can be a superpower when writing soundtracks, but when approaching business decisions, or life calling as a creative, it can be crippling. Some of the most difficult seasons in my career were because of a lack of stillness in my heart and mind. Not slowing down my mind when overworked, and not cultivating the health of my heart when stressed, lonely, confused, or overwhelmed.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
When it comes to music, I have interest and experience in many different genres. Although there are so many directions I could go with my music, I have found there are two areas that bring the most fulfillment. Cinematic music (soundtracks, orchestral productions, compositions) and worship music (christian and congregational songs) have a special place in my heart. When I release cinematic music, it consists of soundtracks from a film, social media project, or a personal composition. When I release christian music, it is either a personal christian song I wrote or a worship song I helped write in collaboration with the Church. Both music genres mean a lot to me in different ways. Cinematic music is complex and emotional, it is musically fulfilling in a way that no other genre can do. Worship music cultivates my soul, and praises my Creator, bringing me to a place of peace. Cinematic music is my career and worship music is my calling.
How do you define success?
I would define success as following your conviction until the end. It doesn’t matter if you win or lose if you did what you felt called to do. I have released over 100 songs on all streaming platforms, some got hundreds of streams and some got millions. If I define success by numbers of streams or followers, my life would be chasing meaningless things that have no real value. Rather, I define success by staying true to the conviction of your calling and career. I know I am meant to release music, so I release it whether I think it will do well or not.
