Conversations with Marcus Dickerson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Dickerson.

Hi Marcus, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I don’t remember a time when books and reading was not a major part of my life. It has been my comfort, my escape, a good clean source of fun for me for as a long as i can remember. Reading was a cornerstone of my childhood, and it actually expanded my already overactive imagination. I used to get lost in the pages of a good book and there was a time if you saw me, I always had a book in my hand. Writing was therapeutic for me because it gave me the permission to explore other worlds and craft realities of my wildest dreams or deepest nightmares. Writing gave me control over a small portion of my life and over time as I grew up into adulthood, it called to me. Writing called to me so much that I got an English degree, left Corporate America back in 2018 after working in that system for a decade and have self-published two books. Writing has quite literally saved my life and reading books has always kept me sane. Today I am a person much different from the one that initially left Corporate America in 2018 and it was all because of the written word.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Smooth road? *Guffaws in Millennial*. This road has been anything but smooth, so far since I’ve left Corporate in 2018, I have survived a global pandemic and in 2026, I’m currently surviving the very collapse of our country. This road has been anything BUT easy. Going through these collective obstacles while in the prime working years of your life can be extremely daunting, but as a millennial, I’ve taken solace in the fact that I am an expert in being comfortable with living uncomfortably. I’ve faced every type of crises that you can imagine which I will lovingly group into an existential crisis however, that is where the best works of creativity comes from. Looking back, I’m glad that I’ve been through so much turmoil, especially in the last several years because it changes you into a savant of sorts, in which you become an expert of the lessons that you’ve learned. The obstacles and challenges that I have overcome have been no small feat; however, it has essentially left me void of fear because I’ve already been through it. After experiencing so many cycles of this it has left me sovereign and I believe that most people go through their entire lives without knowing what that feels like.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an author. I am a creative. I live in art and believe wholeheartedly in right for art to exist. I have written and self-published two books and had to live life for a while before I could safely feel that I actually have something to say for another project. What I do is speak the truth from the way that I see the world and put it in written form. I talk about things either through fiction, poetry or experiences from my own life that may help others. I’m most proud of the fact that I have had to go off the beaten path to come into my own and be unshakeable in that knowledge of who I am. Writing is something that is lifelong for me, no matter how long I may break in between the times I may pick up a pen. I very much forward of sharing more of my personhood with y’all sooner than later.
