Conversations with Lucy Boyd

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucy Boyd.

Hi Lucy , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Mama B Sourdough Company started during my maternity leave from my full-time job with Southwest Airlines after the birth of my first daughter. While I was pregnant, my mom gave me my very first sourdough starter. At one point, I noticed a black liquid on top and, not knowing any better, threw it away because I thought it had gone bad. When I told my mom, she laughed and explained that it was actually “hooch,” a sign that the starter was healthy and simply needed to be fed.

During my maternity leave, she gave me another starter, and I decided to give sourdough another try. What I didn’t realize at the time was that the slow, intentional process of making sourdough was also helping me through postpartum. Baking became my creative outlet and something I genuinely looked forward to each day.

Before long, I was baking so much bread that I started sharing it with family and friends. Their encouragement and excitement made me realize this could become something bigger. I talked to my husband about starting a cottage bakery, and he immediately supported my dream.

From there, I immersed myself in learning everything I could. I followed other sourdough bakers, researched products and equipment, studied Texas cottage food laws, and created a plan for the kind of bakery I wanted to build. Once I had the logistics figured out, I applied to the Grapevine Farmers Market, and that’s where Mama B Sourdough Company truly came to life.

Today, I’m on my second maternity leave with two little ones under the age of two. While balancing motherhood and working a full-time job with Southwest Airlines, I’m still pouring my heart into growing Mama B Sourdough Company. This maternity leave has looked a little different. Instead of just learning sourdough, I’ve been using this time to work on the business. I’ve narrowed down my menu, created a plan for expanding sales, and mapped out how I’ll offer my sourdough products through a bakery stand in front of my home beginning this fall, online, and eventually to retail customers.

This business has always been about more than bread. It has given me a creative outlet, helped me navigate postpartum, and shown me that it’s never too late to chase a dream—even while raising young children and working full-time. One of my favorite parts of this journey has been the incredible sourdough community. Everyone is so supportive, encouraging, and willing to help one another succeed.

Looking back, what started as a simple sourdough starter from my mom has grown into a business that has blessed my family in more ways than I ever imagined. Beyond building a business, I’ve fallen in love with the health benefits of sourdough and the joy of providing wholesome, naturally fermented foods for my own family and for others. It’s incredibly rewarding knowing that something made with simple, quality ingredients can bring people together around the table. I’m excited for this next chapter and to continue growing Mama B Sourdough Company one loaf at a time.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but it has been an incredibly rewarding learning journey over the past three years.

When I started Mama B Sourdough, I funded the business entirely out of
my own pocket while learning how to juggle life with a newborn, a full-time job at Southwest Airlines, and the challenges of building a business from the ground up. I was constantly learning everything from baking and recipe development to pricing my products and figuring out my profit margins.

Just as I started to find my rhythm, I became pregnant with my second baby. As my pregnancy progressed, I had to put the business on pause because, physically, I couldn’t keep up with everything it required. While it was a difficult decision, I knew my family had to come first.

Now, I’m on my second maternity leave with two little ones under two, and instead of seeing this season as a setback, I’ve chosen to see it as an opportunity. I’ve used this time to organize every aspect of my business—from refining my menu and preparing my bakery stand to creating systems for selling online and to retail customers. My goal is to have everything running smoothly before I return to my full-time job.

I know balancing motherhood, a full-time career, and entrepreneurship won’t always be easy. There will be days that feel overwhelming, but I’ve learned the importance of giving myself grace. Every challenge has taught me something, and each obstacle has made Mama B Sourdough stronger. I truly believe this business is going to bring joy not only to my family but also to my community, and that makes every challenge along the way worth it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Mama B Sourdough Company is all about providing wholesome, nourishing food for my community. I’ve always loved cooking for people and seeing the joy on their faces when they take that first bite. I guess you could say food is my love language.

What really drew me to sourdough is how fascinating it is. It’s amazing that one simple starter can be transformed into so many different recipes. Every bake feels a little like creating art—no two loaves or recipes are exactly the same, but they always become something beautiful in the end. I loved the challenge of learning the sourdough process and eventually mastering it.

Some of my customers’ favorite products are my cream cheese sourdough pumpkin muffins, artisan sourdough bread, sourdough brown butter chocolate chip cookies, sourdough tortillas, and my sourdough cinnamon rolls. Hearing customers come back week after week and tell me how much they love my products is one of the most rewarding parts of owning this business.

Being located in Grapevine and having the opportunity to sell at the Grapevine Artisan Farmers Market allowed me to connect with so many wonderful families and members of the community. The support from repeat customers gave me the confidence to continue growing Mama B Sourdough Company.

What sets me apart is that I’m not just selling bread—I’m building relationships. As a mom with two little ones, I understand how important it is to provide healthier food options for our families while still making life a little easier. I also enjoy connecting with older adults who are looking for wholesome alternatives and sharing my knowledge of sourdough with anyone who’s interested. Whether it’s teaching, answering questions, or simply talking about fermentation, I love helping others discover the benefits and joy of sourdough.

What I’m most proud of is building Mama B Sourdough Company from the ground up while balancing motherhood and a full-time career. Knowing that I’m creating food that brings families together around the table and supports healthier lifestyles makes every early morning and late-night bake worth it. My goal has always been to create more than just baked goods—I want to build a business that becomes a trusted part of my community for years to come.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happiest is providing healthy, wholesome food to my community and seeing the joy it brings to others. There’s nothing better than watching a customer take their first bite of one of my Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies or hearing them tell me they came back because a friend or family member recommended Mama B Sourdough Company. Those moments remind me why I started this business. Food has always been my love language, and being able to share something I’ve made from scratch that brings people together, supports their health, and creates lasting memories is incredibly rewarding. Knowing my customers trust me enough to come back again and again keeps me inspired to continue growing my business.
