Conversations with the Inspiring Misty Leiter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Misty Leiter.

Misty, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a Dallas, Texas native and grew up near the Cedar Ridge Nature Preserve. Between hiking at the preserve and climbing trees in the front yard, I was hooked on the natural world. I even convinced my father to let me tag along on a few of my brothers’ boy scout camping trips when I was little. He was a leader in the group at the time. This love for the outdoors now has fueled a fire within me to keep these spaces beautiful. I also enjoy traveling to places that can open my eyes to how what we do in our daily lives effects the world around us. I discovered yoga at 17 and it has grown over the last 10 years into something beyond myself. In 2016, I decided to complete a 200-hour teacher training course to further my understanding of yoga in hopes of being able to share the practice with others and find ways to better connect our bodies and minds to the world around us.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My advice for women interested in starting a business is for them to just get started as soon as they can! Don’t wait until things are perfect. The best thing you can do is to get your message or product out there. Use your experiences in life to make it a unique offering and trust that with hard work, the right things will be fruitful for your growth. Lastly, ask yourself, “Why am I called to do this thing?” Keep this answer with you at all times. Things will get hard but the results are totally worth it!

what should we know about The Flowered Life & Misty Mountain Yoga? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I started The Flowered Life about three years ago. The focus is on handmade, organic, cruelty-free (yes, we are leaping bunny certified!), palm oil free, skin care products. These balms and salves were crafted to have a product that worked well, didn’t have strong scents, were made with natural biodegradable ingredients, and come in options small enough to take on all of your adventures. We are currently selling online, and looking to get into more retail store locations across the US!

My second business is Misty Mountain Yoga. My intention is to use yoga to help bring awareness to my student’s emotional states, create a community of like-minded individuals, encourage personal growth, and physical well being. My favorite ways to practice and teach yoga are at home, in unique locations, outside, or on water. I strive to get people out of their comfort zones and use yoga to find their personal edges. I want to share yoga as a tool to move through life with more compassion, patience, motivation, and empowerment while also learning the physical practice in a safe way.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I know there are too many to put into one paragraph but the one that stands out to me the most currently is the general lack of respect women get in a workplace. The “boys will be boys” mentality has the capability to degrade a woman’s self-worth quickly. On top of issues with equal pay, lack of funding, and lack of education, women have a lot of barriers to overcome.

On the brighter side, we are strong, compassionate, motivated, and fierce. I have personally experienced many women coming together to create powerful groups of entrepreneurs making changes in cities across the US with these issues. I can see change being made.
