Today we’d like to introduce you to Madeline Faye.
Madeline, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I always had a creative side growing up. As a child, I enjoyed exploring nature, writing, painting, and taking photos with whatever disposable camera my parents gave me. My imagination was wild and elaborate. When I was around 12 years old my parents finally bought a basic digital camera and I borrowed it daily.
However, I didn’t take my first art class or really explore art until halfway through college. My sophomore year, I was able to travel abroad and when I returned I immediately changed my degree to Visual Art with a focus in Photography. I felt that everything had aligned for me. Traveling and photography were what I needed in my life.
I dove right in and embraced my artistic development through various art classes. Originally, I didn’t think photography was practical but I’ve learned that I can be an imaginative and creative artist while also making a career out of it. My 20s have been such a wonderful experience in discovering myself as an artist, photographer, and traveler.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
The two subjects in photography I am always drawn to are people and travel. I am fascinated by the human condition, anthropology, and places. It definitely inspires me to photograph people or places in a way that are evocative.
I am also very driven by color. Color is so expressive, whether it influences a mood or elevates a design. The result of my work is meant to give a visceral experience. You know when you smell something that drives you to a past memory and feeling? Or when you gaze at the cotton candy sunset and suddenly your mouth waters? Or when you see a fluffy, soft blanket and absolutely have to touch it? I push for my emotional and colorful photography to provide that sensory experience and to light up all senses.
I gain my inspiration from shows and movies that creatively push cinematography and sensory experiences and from other photographers and artists such as Alex Prager, Cig Harvey, William Eggleston, Wes Anderson, Sofia Coppola, and Annie Leibovitz. My inspirations refresh my mood, invigorate my energy, and gives me the curiosity and the desire to keep learning and reaching out for more.
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I’m excited to be an artist in today’s time for many reasons. The ability to showcase art on media platforms and market one’s art is so feasible! Artists can come together because technology has allowed instant communication, sharing, and support which expands our community. Running a business to create and sell art has become more tangible with social media platforms that allow free or inexpensive marketing and more diverse voices are heard and represented.
Artists need more than a virtual platform, though, and that’s when cities and communities can come together to support artists. We need to be hosting galleries, meetups, art festivals, networking events, art classes for all, and much more. We should be supporting diverse art – like female artists, artists of color, international artists, and young artists — so people can experience perspectives outside of their bubble.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I am most prevalent on Instagram and my website (www.madelinefayephotography.com). I have two handles for Instagram — Madelinefayep for portraits and Madelinefaye for travel. I sell prints, mainly of my travels, and will be selling my prints on items such as mugs, tapestries, and more very soon! I also book sessions for families, couples, models, public figures, graduating seniors, and anyone who wants to treat himself or herself to a creative portrait session with me!
