Art & Life with Angela Weedon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Weedon.

Angela, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
My husband Matt and I have had a family portrait business in Dallas for 18 years. We recently opened our new studio space in the Dallas Design District downtown- it boasts a huge natural light camera room with enormous windows in addition to a gallery where we display large scale artwork of the families we work with.

We specialize in maternity, newborn, children and family portraits, and we have loved following the most fabulous families of Dallas through the years. We also travel around the country doing what we love!

We have worked together for almost 25 years; we met in the Caribbean while studying marine science, and we made our living for years as scuba instructors and underwater photographers. Little did we know back then how our photography career would evolve! We have two children, ages 12 and 15- and who knows, maybe one of them will someday work alongside us!

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
We capture the true joy and love of families. We specialize in showcasing emotions, and work as a team to do so! I (Angela) capture the images while Matt assists in sessions. He also runs all aspects the business from our office downtown.

Whether we are capturing a family that has trusted us yearly for a decade to document their story, or one that has just come to us with their first newborn, we will never forget how blessed we are to do this job!

Our art hangs in some of the country’s finest homes, and we dedicate ourselves to educating our client about the importance of beautiful, tangible portraits that can be enjoyed by the whole family, rather than simply receiving digital files. We provide design services that help to make the families’ portraits the art in their home, and we produce heirloom albums from nearly every session we do. These albums are of heirloom quality and can be passed down for generations.

We also find tons of joy in working for the charities close to our hearts! We have traveled to India on multiple occasions to photograph the children of a very special school called Ark of the Rainbow (arkoftherainbow.org), and Angela has served on the Board of Directors of Tiny Sparrow Foundation for years. (tinysparrowfoundation.org)

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
While building a portfolio, it’s important to create and be true to your own style as an artist…practicing that for years and honing your artistic voice will benefit you greatly if and when you’re ready to make photography your career.

My greatest piece of advice is when you are ready to work professionally as a photographer, is to please charge what you are worth. The cost of doing business is much greater than what I see many people charging for simply a disc of images. It is not fair to the client or the industry to cheapen your time and talent in this way. So, I’d ask that you please take a good look at your costs of doing business well (and legally, with taxes, etc.), and stay true to that.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
We would love to welcome anyone who would like to see our new studio in the Design District to come by and see our gallery! There we showcase all the styles of art we produce for our families, in addition to displaying images from our charity work in India.
