Today we’d like to introduce you to Lavonia Aduba, MSN,FNP-C.
Lavonia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I moved to Dallas as a travel nurse from Memphis, Tennessee in 2013. As I completed my master’s degree, I begin to realize that my future role as a Nurse Practitioner was not going to meet the needs of my patients. My first job was in a primary care clinic and I was expected to see 1 patient every 15 minutes. I felt that I could not properly take of my patients in 15 minutes as well as the battle with the insurance companies to cover their expenses. I stepped out in a Bee direction called direct primary care to directly contract with my patients to not only take control of my treatment time but to also provide affordable health care with easy access for all.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road, not at all. One of the main struggles I faced was working capital. My business is self-funded and I paid out of pocket for my start-up. For some time, I worked my full-time job and then ran the clinic as I could. I felt as though I was always tired and not putting 100% into my dream. Another struggle I faced was getting all the information I needed to properly run my business such as licenses and permits. Each day was filled with research and more research.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Daniel Health & Wellness story. Tell us more about the business.
My company is a medical clinic that provides a direct primary care, IV Hydration, aesthetics, medical weight loss, and anti-aging. I am the primary care provider and I am a Licensed Nurse Practitioner working under the direction of Neal Zeigler, MD. Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I have had the best of both worlds. I have had bad luck happen to me by making hasty decisions while opening my practice, but fortunate to have opportunities to fall out of the sky that has helped my business stay successful. For any entrepreneur, I would always say where there is a will there is a way and you have to find a way.
