Meet Cheryll Smith of FIDO

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheryll Smith.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I was in high school, I was into fashion and music, probably a little more than others. I found the way to get creative haircuts and colors for free, was to be a hair model. It sounds fancier than it was. I was essentially a mannequin who was open to drastically changing her hair. While getting my hair done, I’d look around and think, “This is pretty cool. These are my kind of people.” Unbeknownst to my mom, I was cutting my friends’ hair in our bathroom. Eventually, she found some hair in the sink, and I had to fess up to what I had done. She made a couple of contradictory faces, then she asked me to trim her bangs for her! A little later, I was dating my now-husband. We were talking about what I was going to do after I graduated. He said, “You’re already cutting your friends’ hair. You could do that.” This had been an idea I was already tossing around, and all I needed was a nod of confidence from someone. I went to beauty school right out of high school, met some talented friends, and had a start in the direction I wanted–to work in the beauty and fashion Industry.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being a freelancer is not for the tender hearted. It’s a very competitive field and retail and marketing trends fluctuate. Getting jobs is tough, keeping jobs is tough.

Please tell us about Cheryll Smith and FIDO.
Currently I am a hairstylist and makeup artist with the Campbell Agency. I work on a variety of jobs: print, runway, video, wig design, and personal bookings. My clients range from luxury retailers Neiman Marcus and Stanley Korshak, to national retail chain The Container Store. Fashion shows and events for Jan Strimple Productions, Rhonda Sargent Chambers Productions, and Karl Marshal Productions and the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.

I’m especially proud of founding FIDO, Fashion Industry Dog Organization. We are a 501c3 that advocates and raises money for existing dog-related charities. Our main fundraiser is the yearly FIDO Sand Volleyball Tournament. I’m very excited about this year’s beneficiary, Hounds for Heroes. They train and provide service dogs for veterans and first responders at no cost to the recipient.
