Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Orosco Montiel.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
People are always shocked when they hear my history with makeup. I was a tomboy growing up, raised with boys, dresssing in oversized garments and hanging with “the guys” . Even now, looking back, I would of never pictured myself to be the woman I am today. I’m so passionate about fashion and ofcourse MAKEUP.
My grandfather who raised me is a PAINTER. He has owned his own painting business since I can remember, so I guess it was instilled in me to own my own business one day and painting… well that was in my blood.
Though I was never into makeup as a kid, like most Makeup Artist, it began with drawing and painting. I loved to create things and I liked it even better when I people enjoyed what I created.
A little after high school is when my makeup journey began. I struggled in College because the major I picked was not what I really wanted to do so my advisor Mrs.Crow, guided me to do what I was passionate about, makeup.
It was set, after that, I grabbed anyone I could get my hands on for practice. Then later charging $20 dollars, then $30 and so on, then Instagram came to light and I used that as my outlet to gain clientele and attention. Then, eventually resigning from my job to be a full-time Makeup Artist with the support of my family, friends, and husband.
Wow, from then to now, I’ve had a lot of amazing opportunities. I hope to be a celebrity makeup artist one day, seeing my work on the red carpet and tv would be a dream come true. I look forward to getting there.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’ve seen a lot of people come and go. Having your own business is not easy PERIOD and Some people cannot take rejection, and that is something that I have had to endure far too many times, but I’ve gotten up stronger each time with more ambition.
For the aspiring makeup artist I would say, go for it, take a chance! If you are truely passionate about it nothing can bring you down.
We’d love to hear more about Crystal Montiel Makeup Artist.
My motto is “ Less is more”. I like a lighter yet flawless appearance. Healthy glowing skin is my main focus.
I look for inspiration from some of my favorite celebrity makeup artist: Patrick-ta, Hung Vanngo, Mary Phillips and of course, Makeup by Mario to name a few.
In my community, what sets me apart is my simplicity. I don’t like to cake on makeup and I don’t really enjoy glitter cut creases, though I find it beautiful and an art form itself it’s not something I like to focus on in my artistry.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
Of course my mother, she too is a business owner. She is the hardest working woman I know and she taught me how to hustle and never give up.
My friends, with their constant support. My sister in laws, who too are in the beauty industry. They inspire me every day.
And of course, I can’t forget about my fellow Dallas Makeup Artists.
