Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Voss.
Amy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After leaving my career in the radio/television industry and taking on the challenges of motherhood – during my pregnancy I was searching for something to fill the void of not working. A friend introduced me to mosaic art, and the minute I tried it I fell in love with the process. It was very therapeutic for me, and gave me the ability to have focus and patience that I never thought I was capable of. I have always had a huge passion for music, so this gave me a chance to expand on that passion in a unique way. I am self-taught, and over the past 9 years I have evolved my skills through experimentation and lots of mistakes. I started creating my guitars for fun, but the more I learned and the more creations I made, the more I wanted other people to enjoy them as well – so I slowly started to make the hobby into a business. Over the past few years, I’ve been featured at a retail gift shop in Austin, a coffee bar in downtown Dallas, and most recently picked up by UncommonGoods.com.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not a smooth road. I don’t think any artist has a smooth road to putting their art out into the world given the subjectivity of it all. Challenges have been getting my guitars in front of the right audience/buyer. My guitars don’t fit into the typical art category, given their uniqueness, it’s been difficult for them to be seen as a piece of art rather than an instrument, and therefore marketing such a unique product has been very difficult.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Glass Axes – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I create one of a kind glass mosaic art pieces using acoustic guitars as my canvas. Each piece of glass is hand cut and placed on the guitar to create the design, making it a unique piece of art to be hung on a wall or placed on a guitar stand. I’m most proud of how they make people feel – those that have received one as a gift or a commissioned piece, their response to having one is the best part of what I do. I think what sets me a part from others is that no one really does the type of art that I do in the way that I do it.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
On top of any custom designs I do for clients, I’m currently working on a musician legend series (Willie Nelson, Prince, Tom Petty, and David Bowie). I’m also planning on tapping into more of an abstract approach to my designs, based on things that I’ve seen and places I’ve been that have inspired me. I was recently in Portugal, which gave me lots of inspiration to create something that mimics all the beautiful parts of Portugal that I was able to travel to. More than anything, I hope to continue to find the right places for my guitars to be seen and enjoyed by others.
