Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Moon.
Jamie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My journey started with a Wilton cake class at a local Michael’s store. Once I got into the class, I realized how closely cake and art go together. As an art major, I could never decide one media. I therefore never continued and instead got a photography degree. To choose just one media was like only using one color from the crayon box. With cakes you can draw, paint, mold, sculpt, and many more.
The possibilities were endless, and each cake was a new canvas. My mind was immediately hooked. I spent at least 1 year just reading cake websites and absorbing all the information I could. Diving head first into sugar was the best thing I ever did. It’s therapeutic and creative freedom. You just have to be ok with everyone eating your art.
I began competing in cake shows and won quite a few awards. I was published in two books; the first was an eBook for Wicked Goodies with my gingerbread creation. The second book is titled Sweet Fairy Tales in the Kindle section on Amazon, and all donations go to www.projectnightnight.org. The octopus cake I made was published in American Cake Decorating Magazine. I won 4th at That Takes The Cake located in Austin. I competed in the Oklahoma Sugar Arts Show (The Super Bowl of cake shows) in the Grand National Championship winning bronze.
However, the thing I loved most about my career so far was gathering a bunch of artists from all over the state of Texas. Together I formed a group to create sugar art for the State Fair. We each chose something we loved about the fair from iconic items to fair food. The fair played the video we made the entire fair and asked me to come as a celebrity chef. I made a sugar bottle in the shape of a vintage Coca-Cola bottle and presented it to Coca-Cola.
We then took all the creations we made from the fair to Cook’s Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth. I wanted to give back to the community. So we made a little sugar show for the children to come to see our creations and we wanted them to join in the cake fun. We brought fun little toys for them to mold and make their own creations. This took tons of time and attention from myself and my assistant Melody Pierce with Dough Re Mi Designs.
In the end, we pulled off something I had only dreamed of. As a native Texan, this just makes my heart sing. I plan to have future trips to Cook’s Children’s Hospital to once again share the knowledge we have gained with those young creative minds. The industry is changing weekly with new inventive products.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think all business owners struggle with the balance of home life and work. For me, a decision was made to go with cookies due to the time constraints cakes played in my life.
With small children needing my attention it was crucial that I slow down. Cookies allow me more time with my family.
I will still do sculpted cakes however it’s hard to sell sculpted cakes without everyone asking for birthday/wedding cakes. So you really do have to pick one or the other.
Please tell us about The Pink Velvet Cookie.
I make decorated sugar cookies that are soft and very flavorful. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never been a huge fan of sugar cookies. They always tasted bland or were just not as appetizing as a chocolate chip cookie. My husband felt the same way, which made us both great test subjects! I have tried 50+ recipes and tweaked and fiddled with mine until it is truly perfect. Both the test subjects waistlines and lack of self-control agree we have found a perfect sugar cookie.
Which is exactly what my reviews reveal. “Wow these are so good, the texture is different.” I enjoy what I do tremendously and am so grateful I get to be a part in special family memories, friendships, gratitude, and weddings. I can do all kinds of cookies from formal to fun. Each purchase also helps with a charity donation I make to the Pythian Home in the form of cookies for each child’s birthday.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Well, I wish I could go back in time and tell myself to not be so hard on myself. I had a newborn and toddler and thought I wasn’t doing enough.
Now I look back, and I’m amazed at how I didn’t sleep standing up! The endless long nights and all the things I wanted to accomplish and I did them. I would have also spent more time measuring doorways and oven dimensions for my really huge cakes.
Ever had an idea that wouldn’t fit through the door? I have! I always said, “Learn something new, go big or go home, it’s not about the winning.” I still agree with that statement.
