Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Wilkerson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Nicole. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It started really early on! I always really enjoyed drawing and painting, and as I got into high school, I started experimenting in sculpture & woodwork, too. I focused on fine arts in college, oil painting & figure drawing mostly.
Once my husband & I bought a house, I started doing a lot of DIY projects, which really got me back into woodworking after a decade hiatus. I built us a few upholstered bed frames & headboards a porch swing, a coffee table, an upholstered kitchen nook a playhouse…
I started accumulating tools as I needed them and now I have a pretty decent shop. I’m not sure I have a niche, I really just like being creative, in any capacity.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been smooth because it’s all been on my terms. I only take on projects I want, whether that means for myself or others.
I stay pretty busy with orders, and when I don’t have any I just do the projects around my house I want to be done.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Rose Monroe Creations story. Tell us more about the business.
Well, it’s just me, myself & I. All out of my shop (garage)! I mostly make small wooden things: tables, trays, stairwell gates, wine racks, bottle openers, corn hole boards, lawn cutouts & door hangers, but I also do fine art too, especially acrylic on canvas & glass.
What sets me apart is the fine art aspect of my projects. I personalize all my woodwork with a hand-painted design. It’s a sort of functional art. Nothing is stenciled, traced, or vinyl cutout.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Hopefully, I just keep trucking. I’d like to get some bigger tools that make certain jobs easier. I don’t really see it growing substantially because it’s just a side gig to being a stay at home mom.
I work during naps and while my kids watch toons. I could afford to take on a few more projects, but I don’t want it to become something I don’t enjoy.
