An Inspired Chat with Duzzyn. of Frisco

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Duzzyn.. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Duzzyn., we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
Embracing being an artist through-and-through and all what comes with that. It’s a pretty nerve-wracking to have to put yourself and your most vulnerable experiences/thoughts out there. Even seemingly creative ambitious and unique thoughts are second-guessed because of not knowing if it’ll resonate enough to be understood and properly appreciated. But I understand, gradually and daily, that that’s what makes art so potent and timeless—filtering art and the world through your personal lens. It’s even discouraging to know you can give your all to your craft and may never see results you desire. But what keeps me going is my vision, passion, and the opportunity to at least say I exhausted all options to bypass any regret; I’d rather say “I wish I would’ve done it more like this…” instead of “I wish I would’ve just taken the leap faith” because I was afraid of both failure, and the success of chasing a dream.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m duzzyn. I’m an aspiring recording artist born in St. Louis, but I’ve spent most of my life now in Dallas (more North Texas). With that said, I’d say my brand is my lens. I know my suburban upbringing is not too rare in the Black community, but in music, I still don’t hear many voices that reflect the experience of growing up Black in predominantly white or non-Black environments. And in turn, I believe that’s what makes me unique, plus staying authentic to that, along with my creative/artistic abilities. I’ve gotten a late start as far as recording and releasing music, but I’ve been getting better since I’ve started, and I have a lot planned going forward.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
Not sure if it counts as a belief about myself rather than just a belief about life I had as a child, but I would say it was that if I wasn’t immediately successful, it meant I wasn’t good at what it was I was trying to be successful at. But in reality, even though you may be a natural and talented/skilled, it’ll never be enough without a strong work ethic and looking to put yourself in the best position for the right opportunities.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of failure—I still struggle with it, but I grow more and more resilient the more I at least try to fight through it.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
Lauryn Hill—Of course, I don’t know her personally, but from things I’ve read and what I’ve seen from her publicly, she has a very unwavering moral compass and is unwilling to be separated from it. She never released another follow-up to The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill due to her inability to embrace fame and the industry machine. She’s opinionated and satisfyingly eloquent as much as she is a legend, in my opinion.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What light inside you have you been dimming?
I believe the light is just the potential and the whole spectrum of my artistic abilities. Aside from music, I believe I have a path to become a successful creator in multiple fields. I believe I can wear a “Creative Director” hat well.
