We recently had the chance to connect with Jessica Wood and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
I get lost in my studio. It’s not huge but it’s enough. Pinging back and forth through several different projects makes my brain happy. It’s very easy for me to hyperfocus and totally cut out the rest of the world. I’m 38 and still have not felt like I have found myself fully.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a full time artist now, going on about 6 years now. A painter, I use mostly mixed media, acrylics, charcoal & pastels to create abstract artwork. I’m also on the autism spectrum, diagnosed later in life. I’ve always been a little different from everyone else just never could put my finger on why until I received my diagnosis.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
The relationship between me and my children has shaped how I see myself. Self esteem issues have plagued me my entire life. Seeing my children grow into confident, self assured, positive human beings everyday is the reassurance I receive.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of being perceived which is ironic. Being an artist doesn’t automatically mean I want everyone to see all of my artwork. I started out only painting for myself. I had a friend come over and take a look at what I was working on and they absolutely loved it, wanted me to paint something for them. Then I started sharing.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely yes. It’s very hard for me to be anything other than the way I am.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
In my home studio working on multiple paintings of different sizes. Headphones on. My brain is always going a thousand miles an hour. I can’t turn that off or slow it down but I can channel it into creating beautiful or interesting.
