An Inspired Chat with Jori Bowman of Cedar Hill

Jori Bowman shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Jori, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I decided to start taking the hours before 10am to prepare myself for the day. The purpose of this time is to align my mind with thoughts that will benefit me throughout my day. I have developed a spiritual routine and applied practices to aid with this. The goal is to wake up with the intent of having a blessed day in every way. Easing my mind into a calm space helps me focus & mediate . Next, I take the time to say my prayers for myself, those who I love and those who I don’t agree with. This routine brings about the clarity I need to be a blessing to the earth as I walk it. Making sure I stay a blessing to myself without stressing myself. I strive to complete this routine daily.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello, I’m JoJo or Jori. I like to call myself a serial entrepreneur due to my passion for the many careers I want to pursue.
I am currently wearing many hats. I am a licensed beautician who specialized in healthy hair growth for my clients. I also create and provide an all-natural hair product called ” Hair Crack”, This product was made to eliminate the common issues that those with textured & natural hair have. Such as tangles, dry scalp and keeping an overall healthy head of hair. I started selling my product at local events and markets, this is where I ran into Spinny Brand Market for the Disabled. I have scoliosis so this market was special for me, finally a place for me to thrive. This helped me get out my shell to start connecting with folks in Dallas. Fast forward some months I am working with Spinny to make the Market flourish. You can find me on the mic guiding you through the event, calling raffles and making sure customers check out our vendors. My main goal is for everyone there to enjoy their selves. Being the friendly face that they can count on. About 2 years ago I decided to step into my dreams of event coordinator/ Host. I started off hosting on the rooftop at the Granda in lower Greenville. Inviting folks out to enjoy anime night they had on Sunday. While hosting this event I begin to connect with other ladies who had the same dream as me for Dallas, this led to Geeky Girls being created. GG is a nonprofit all women social club that encourages ladies to indulge their interest with other women. Giving me the opportunity to host safe and secure events for folks looking to have fun without the shenanigans. I’ve been able to create serval fun events for the group and other blerds [black+nerds] out there. I’ve truly enjoyed this new journey in life. I still have many other careers in store. Such as a voice actor, spiritual practitioner, and sex therapist to name a few. I am currently hosting Meditation crash course for those who are looking to learn more on the process of meditation to be able to apply it properly. The humanitarian in me keeps me pushing to help others by providing that space I’d love to have as well as what others have expressed on what they are looking for when having fun.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I believe what breaks bond is the “un” of something. The unwillingness to learn something new or to hear someone else’s perspective. As they say blocking your blessings. With holding them from actually stepping into the purpose that is for them. This blocks them from being able to truly connect with another soul. Which is needed, we all learn something from each other this is how we grow. God gave us the power of freewill and knowledge. How we choose to use it is what helps restore these bonds. Keeping the growth going, breaking the habit of becoming stagnant with our social skills as well as our own social boundaries. Removing the “un ” from things and replacing it with the power of doing. Becoming willing, lovable and the person you love to be.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of public speaking has been a major setback for me. I used to always get so nervous to the point when it was time to talk nothing would come out right. I’m speed talking, not saying the right words and brain shutting off. No one has any idea on what I was trying to say or worse I didn’t get it out. This even started affecting how I spoke up in moments that I considered crucial in life. I finally decided to change this by taking on small steps to feeling confident about speaking in front of others. I started off with talking to myself, getting familiar with my own voice. Next, I started out reading to my friends then gradually moved into speaking in front of a crowd. Yep I did it , the jump was scary and satisfying, teaching me how much power my words hold. Directing an event flow while also influencing those there to be a part of the energy you are bringing is magical. The feeling of having what you said heard/received by others as well as the ‘good job well done’ feeling you get makes all the nerves worth it. I now get good nerves when it’s time to speak in front of folks. I look forward in continuing to challenge myself in public speaking.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
That knowledge is power; its APPLIED knowledge is power. Knowing something and to not use it, is a waste of power. Knowledge is not for your own selfish desire to feel powerful over others. It for sharing with others to keep the continuation of ideas growing amongst humans. To think you are the smartest thing ever and there’s nothing you can learn is actually not smart. This is how we as human stay stagnate in life whether it’s in something that affect us all or as individuals. Having the understanding to know there’s always more to learn leads a person to success. The smartest of the bunch know the more knowledge applied the more you thrive. To not short their selves with the ignorant thought that just knowing is enough. Taking the time to see does the applied knowledge work for self then pray fully for someone else. Turning this knowledge into truth, and we all love living in our truth.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m outside by myself taking in the nature at its finest. Sometimes I can get that peace by just stepping outside at home. Lately I have found a nature reserve where I can be away from neighbors, cars rushing to their destination or any other distraction. I use the nature to guide me to my natural state of being. I enjoy getting lost in natures beauty, whether it’s roaming the woods, sitting down to meditate or laying down to enjoy the sounds the earth provides. Natures music is one of the most loving sounds in the world to enjoy, I make sure to take the time to get these peaceful moments in weekly to keep the peace in me.
