An Inspired Chat with Key Dotson of Trinity Groves

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Key Dotson. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Key, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Honestly, Being 9 months pregnant and guilt-free eating whatever I want has been bliss. For once, I’m not stressing about my body or calories. I’m just enjoying the moment. It’s reminded me that food genuinely brings me joy, and that I don’t have to earn it or punish myself for it. Life’s too short not to enjoy good food… in peace! Moderation matters, sure, but so does giving yourself grace. Eat the cake.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey y’all! I’m Key, the creator of Ghetto Bible Story, where we break down Bible stories in a way your cousin, auntie, and best friend can actually understand (and laugh at). I started this brand to show people that God’s word ain’t just for the perfect, polished church folks, it’s for all of us. The ones who cuss a little, pray a lot, feel confused, and are just tryna figure it out.

What people don’t realize is… this world BEEN ghetto! We got side chicks in the Old Testament, divine baby daddies, people backdooring their own friends, and yet God still used them for His glory. That’s what makes it beautiful. Imperfect people, still called, still chosen. Just like us.

I’m not a preacher, just a storyteller walking in obedience with a passion for making God’s word make sense. This brand is God-led, Spirit-filled, and 100% about to be a whole movement. And we just gettin’ started.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My grandmother, Joyce Marie Lacey. 🥹 From the time I was a little girl, she made me feel like I was destined for something greater. It was in her energy, her smile, and the way she hyped me up when I played dress up in her heels and sparkly clothes. She let me shine before I even knew I had a light.

She was my inspiration~fashionable, fiery, and fearless. She didn’t bite her tongue for nobody, and I loved that about her. Her presence made me feel safe, seen, and powerful. Being around her helped me escape the hard parts of my reality and imagine more for myself.

She passed when I was just 18, and even now, that loss still aches. But she’s still my why. Always and forever.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
God is real.

Every time I’ve suffered—felt low, lost, or overwhelmed, I’ve turned to Him. And every single time, He showed up. Even as a kid who didn’t grow up in church or even really know how to pray, I still felt God’s presence over my life. He’s never left me. I know He hears me. I know He sees me.

Success is a blessing, yes. But it can’t teach you dependence. It can’t teach you surrender. It can’t teach you the power of faith in the fire.

There is no success without God. Period. He is the blueprint for it all.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
God, my family, food, and loyalty, without a doubt. God is my foundation. I’m nothing without Him. My family is my why. Being the third oldest of 11, I’ve always carried that sense of responsibility, dreaming even as a little girl, about being able to provide and create a better life for us.

But as I’ve grown, I’ve realized it’s not my job to be their provider, it’s my job to lead them closer to God, so that He can be that for them. I’m not their Savior, just a vessel.

Also… I’m a certified foodie. I love food, and I’mma stick beside it. 😅 This is why I’m also in the gym so much, because if not, Whew.

Loyalty is everything to me. If you can’t be real, honest, and loyal, we just can’t vibe. I build with people who value the same. Period. Be Authentic.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
That God is the plug. Period.

Why wouldn’t you want a relationship with someone who knows everything, sees everything, has been through everything, and still wants to & can give you the desires of your heart, as long as it brings Him glory?

This life on earth is so temporary. I look around and see how easy it is to get caught up in what everyone else has—success, money, houses, cars, all that but truthfully, none of it means anything without purpose.

The most important thing in this life is God’s purpose for His glory, not ours. Most people aren’t focused on that, and honestly, I wasn’t either. I still get distracted sometimes. But at the end of the day, we’re here one minute and gone the next… and people gone move on.

So the real question is: What’s your relationship with God looking like? That’s what matters most.
