We recently had the chance to connect with Kristina Medina and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristina, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I recently attended Dallas Fashion Week, and it was such an inspiring experience! Seeing the creativity, attention to detail, and bold styling on the runway sparked new ideas for my work as a hairstylist. It reminded me of how collaborative the fashion and beauty industries are and how exciting it is to work alongside designers, models, and other artists to bring a vision to life. Experiences like this motivate me to stay innovative with fresh ideas, while connecting with people in the industry!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Kristina Medina, and I am a Texas based hairstylist of over 13 years specializing in custom hair extensions, balayage, and corrective color. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with an incredible range of clients from every day transformations to editorial and special event styling. What I love most about my work is the connection I get to build with people. Hair is deeply personal— it’s self expression, confidence, and sometimes even healing. I am constantly inspired by texture, color, and movement—Whether that’s found in nature, fashion or street style. My approach is rooted in creativity and precision, but always with the clients individuality in mind. My goal is for every person who sits in my chair to leave not just looking amazing but feeling like the best version of themselves.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
When I’m in the salon, I find myself talking to clients about the discipline that I learned as a student-athlete. Growing up, I played fast-pitch softball very competitively and it allowed me to get a scholarship and go to college! Being an athlete taught me resilience, focus and drive. These are qualities that shape how I see the world today because I’ve learned that challenges are opportunities to grow, that success comes from consistent effort and collaboration, and that staying committed to your goals can push you further. These lessons have shaped the way I approach life and my work, keeping me disciplined, inspired, and dedicated.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could tell my younger self something, it would be to trust your instincts, practice gratitude and don’t be afraid to stand out or do bold things. I’d tell her to celebrate the small wins, enjoy the journey, and trust the path that God has laid out.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest battle the hair industry faces is the misconception around hair growth. There’s a constant promise of a miracle growth product, but in reality, healthy hair depends on a combination of genetics, diet, hydration, stress management, and overall health. Products alone can’t do it all, but consistency and awareness of the ingredients and formulas in your products can make a difference.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What will you regret not doing?
One thing I’ll never regret is taking the chance on myself and to fully invest in my passion. Having the courage to step out of my own comfort zone and trust my skills, vision and creativity. As well as keeping a strong faith that has allowed me to grow as a hairstylist and as a person, and to pursue new opportunities.
