An Inspired Chat with Lia Bai of Dallas

We recently had the chance to connect with Lia Bai and have shared our conversation below.

Lia , really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I actually have a little morning ritual. As soon as I wake up, I treat myself to a cup of coffee or hot tea—depending on my mood that day. Then I take a quiet moment for my morning prayer and start my day with God. After breakfast, I settle in to write comedy—sometimes new bits, sometimes patching up old ones. I give myself about an hour before my brain starts crying, ‘Enough! Let’s go outside and work out.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Sure—commercial time! I’m a Christian comedian who blends storytelling, faith, and punchlines. As the self-proclaimed “Fake Cowgirl, Real Laughter,” I bring a fresh perspective shaped by my immigrant journey, finding humor in relationships, motherhood, career changes, aging, and culture-clash chaos. Off the comedy stage, I’m a featured TEDx speaker and author, with appearances on NBC 5 and across social media. My mission? To deliver real laughter, healing, and joy to the world.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Becoming a mom completely changed how I see the world. After a high-risk pregnancy—thanks to my age and a history of miscarriages—I gave birth to a beautiful and healthy baby girl. She is our miracle child and the greatest blessing in my life. With her arrival, my journey into motherhood truly began: an adventure filled with challenges, surprises, and immeasurable joy. Motherhood has taught me patience, gratitude, and the ability to laugh at absolute nonsense—which, by the way, turned out to be excellent training for stand-up comedy.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
This is a perfect question for a comedian. I stopped hiding my pain the moment I decided to brand myself as a comedian—back in late 2019, with a few ‘pandemic gap years’ in between, of course.

As a stand-up performer, I entertain people by talking about nothing but my problems, mistakes, and setbacks. Somehow, when you confess your chaos into a microphone, people laugh—and their laughter is like music to my ears.

Most recently, I delivered a killer set at the 2025 Plano Comedy Festival. During our show at Backdoor Comedy, a legendary club in DFW, I felt this incredible connection with the audience. It was like swimming in the ocean—effortless, joyful, and absolutely exhilarating.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
One cultural value I protect fiercely is gratitude. My immigrant journey taught me to appreciate every blessing—big or small—and to honor the opportunities I’ve been given. Gratitude keeps me grounded, humble, and hopeful. It’s a value I hold tightly, both onstage and off. And, of course, as a Christian, I always praise God for His love, grace, and protection.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
If I had 10 years left, I’d stop stressing over social media and trying to please everyone. Life’s too short! I’d focus on joy—family, comedy, travel… and maybe finally riding a horse without falling, since I’m a ‘Fake Cowgirl, Real Laughter.’
