Trey Mack shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Trey, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
I’m most proud of building my spiritual life. It really grounds me and keeps me from over reacting or losing hope when things don’t go as planned. I think it’s the biggest reason I’m able to do what I do on the days things feel overwhelming.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Trey Mack. I’m a stand up comedian from Birmingham, AL. My mission is to help people see God (John 12:45), help people feel better (Proverbs 17:22), and exhibit excellence (Colossians 3:23). Going from being a quiet church boy to a stand up comedian, I feel my purpose in this field is to show how God can literally use ANYBODY. Nothings too big. Nothings out of reach. He uses whoever he chooses, and He can use you too!
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
I walked in church one day and “Good morning” and nobody said it back. They made me so mad lol. I told my mom i was never going to say “Good morning” to people again. She told me dont worry what other people do. I was taught to speak when i walk in a room, dont worry about the rest. My mom showed me the importance of doing what I knew was right regardless of how other people treat you or respond. It’s something that shaped the way I live my life to this day.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell myself that it’s not going to be easy. And that its not supposed to be. But that I’m capable of doing everything I think I am. Do the work. There’s no shortcuts. It won’t be glamorous. It won’t be pretty. But if you do the work, you will be successful. I GUARANTEE IT!
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
I have a different idea of success. My friend Corey Cherry told “Success is doing what you love” and I’ve felt successful ever since. People say to me often “man you’re gonna make it one day” and I dont know how to tell them… I already have. I dont believe we have to wait for success. If you are fortunate enough to do what you love for a living, or even know what you want to do for a living, you are so blessed.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Colossians 3:23 talks about doing everything as if you are doing it for God and not for people. I think about this every time I perform. Sometimes I lose focus on the right thing but for the most part I like to think that even if nobody cared, as long as I felt I was in purpose and God was pleased I’d continue.
