Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Plan.
Andrew, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I got into music through my dad, who’s a big Beatles and Eagles fan. At 15 years old I decided to pick up one of his guitars in high school, and I quickly caught the music bug. I cut my chops playing in an alternative rock band called “Modern Day Nostalgia” (I know, right?). After the band broke up, I got really interested in writing songs for myself, and pursued that in my free time while I was attending college and going through the pre-med track. After graduating from college, I spent 9 months doing public health research in the Philippines as a Fulbright Scholar. While I was over there I realized I didn’t want to do research or medicine as my vocation. So, when I got back, I spent a few years in Longview helping out my parents at their clinic while working on my music craft and figuring out my next steps. Knowing that I would need a stable, enjoyable career that could support my art as I continue to develop, I eventually decided to go into tech and attended the DevMountain Dallas web development boot camp. I now work at a West End startup as a web developer, while continuing to build my body of work as a solo artist as well as writing songs for other artists.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I make music, both for myself as an artist, as well as for other artists. I primarily work in the pop and singer-songwriter genres, though I’ve recently branched out into writing for country artists, which I’m really enjoying. I’m drawn to making music because I’ve always found it difficult to express my feelings, yet I’ve always had a strong desire to do so. Ever since I was in high school, making music has helped me to work through my emotions and the peaks and valleys of life, which has made me a better person and has strengthened my relationships. I’m drawn to create music that is real about the struggles of life, but that is ultimately hopeful and comforting. I hope people come away from my music supported and empowered to press forward through whatever challenges they’re facing right now.
Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
Find a mentor you trust, who’s gotten to where you want to go as an artist. Try out each piece of advice before deciding whether or not it’s for you. Don’t try to do everything yourself. Find “your team”, the people that shore up your weaknesses and help bring out the best in you, creatively and career-wise.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
People can listen to my music at andrewplan.com or soundcloud.com/andrewplan. The best way people can support my work is to join my mailing list at andrewplan.com and come on this crazy artist journey with me.
