Art & Life with Armando Sebastian

Today we’d like to introduce you to Armando Sebastian.

Armando, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I think I found my vocation for painting and drawing as a child in Monterrey Mexico where I was born and raised , I remember that I spent the mornings in the kitchen with my mom and my grandma , on one of the walls there were two stylish wooden paintings with Mexican Folk-art it was a boy and a girl carrying a basket with fruit, I spent hours watching them sitting at the table and trying to draw them, I remember my grandma asking me to keep drawing, she’d call my drawings “Monas” I think In reference to The Mona Lisa, for being feminine since they were usually women, sometimes I also drew fruits and flowers. I always inclined for the artistic expression in my teenage years I designed costumes for plays but in the end, I decided on painting, it was here in Dallas almost 8 years ago that I began my professional career as an Artist.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My work consists of oil paintings, I am a self-taught artist I never had professional training, my main source of inspiration is literature, music, manga and Art of the eighteenth century I also get inspired by rare objects and toys, I love to visit antique shops, nature is also a main element in my work. I like when people identify themselves in my art, when they feel moved, transported in time, I like to provoke questions and answers at the same time, I consider myself as a storyteller, each painting tells a story. I often question to myself about the meaning of life and death, about light and darkness, Love and the history of humanity, why we are here on this planet? I like to explore all these subjects in my work.

What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
I don’t think my role has changed as an Artist in this times I feel more committed than ever to keep creating Art .I personally consider my painting as a personal journey ,something that will unveil my own truth ,by telling my story I hope people can feel related in a way .I do Intent to bring awareness and sensitivity for the LGBTQIAX community ,in most of my work I like to give my art subjects a question gender as a symbol of the times that we are living now where love should be all that matters .I do admire and respect those whom art has political ,historical and social content .
