Art & Life with Chris Brizzard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Brizzard.

Chris, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I began drawing again out of pure boredom while working in the outskirts of Osaka in 2010. Wanting to learn more about drawing and painting, I began taking classes at The Society of Figurative Arts here in Dallas when I returned to the States in 2013. Wanting to learn more still, I studied for three years at Studio Incamminati in Philadelphia, basically a kind of boot camp for artists that takes you through the fundamentals of drawing and painting, where I also met my wife, Dian Paramita. We came back to Dallas last year and have been working in our studios since.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am mainly involved with drawing and painting. There is an area that exists between the real and the abstract, a place where observation, imagination and the subconscious merge, and it is my long-term goal to be able to express what I find there. I like the idea of not spelling everything out for the viewer, of letting their imagination somehow fill in the gaps. Think of a David Lynch film where some things are left unexplained and yet the story goes on. It creates a kind of cognitive dissonance that I find fascinating.

In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
I think the biggest challenge facing artists today is an age-old one: finding a way to sustain oneself financially while doing the thing one loves. Putting aside finances, another huge challenge is finding the medium that best allows you to communicate what you want to express. This takes a lot of trial and error and truly listening to oneself, not to external ideas about how things should be done.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Go to chrisbrizzard.com or @chrisbrizzard on instagram to see current things I’m working on. I also teach drawing classes and workshops at The Craft Guild here in Dallas (thecraftguild.org). You can support our organization by taking a class there!
