Art & Life with Eric Cantu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Cantu.

Eric, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I have been tattooing for a little while now, I was 16 when I did my first tattoo. The tattoo I did was a script/memorial piece of a friends mom name on his shoulder she had passed away when he was younger it was great feeling to help someone going through something rough in their life. At that moment I realized I knew I wanted to be a tattooer and I could do something that can help people and also allows me to express myself through the art of tattooing. After a few years of getting nowhere thinking I knew what I was doing scratching around on myself and making bad decisions was getting me nowhere, I finally woke up and started going into tattoo shops bugging shop owners to hopefully give me an apprenticeship, after being told no at a few shops with I finally found a shop called Red, White, And Blue Tattoo where I found the owner Troy Fox AKA Rabbit {RIP} who opened the door for me, for witch I’m beyond grateful for and allowed me to start apprenticing under his parlor. Before I knew it I was doing what I loved and making a decent living for an 18 year old. I’ve been doing what I love ever since and haven’t looked back once I absolutely love this industry and I’m so stocked to be a part of it, in this time era of where the art of tattooing it is evolving so fast! Benn tattooing 13 year now professionally, As far as up to date news I’m 31 now, and I’m currently at Rebel Muse Tattoo in Lewisville Texas working with some amazing artist I’m honored to be a part of such an awesome team!

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
Love creating custom design that’s going to last a lifetime on the canvases I’m tattooing. I thrive to be a well-rounded artist that’s versatile in creating a custom tattoo for anyone with all different kinds of tastes and styles like black and gray/watercolor/traditional/neo-traditional/realism/tribal/new-school/japanese/blackwork. I hope people are happy with the artwork I have put on them to wear for the rest of their lives and can’t explain the respect I have for clients that give me the trust and artistic freedom to create something unique for them and I hope to create a lot more in the future. 🙂

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
I’d say focus on creating and producing art regardless of finances and do it part time if you have to, but as long as your moving forward and creating then at least your moving and not spinning your wheels in the same spot and having big goals to push you and drive you to getting to where you want to be.
