Today we’d like to introduce you to J.D. Christopher.
J.D., please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I got my love for music at an early age. From my dad and his friends playing old country and classic rock songs on the porch to later in my teenage years with my step dad playing bass in a Houston punk band called The Living Dolls. My first attempt at starting a band was very much me trying to copy what the living dolls were doing. In my early 20s after my first band fell apart and losing my parents ( my biggest musical influences), I went through a few years of not doing anything musically.
Finally, I came to realize that nothing makes me happier than writing and performing music and that missing that part of my life was something I couldn’t live with anymore.
So I called my friend and drummer Dillard and together we started Pretty Decent.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
At the core, I like to think I’m a songwriter. I write songs dealing with the loss of my parents and the loneliness that comes with that as well as my struggles with my mental health. After every show I hope people walk away feeling what I felt and even if it’s just for the 45 minutes we are on stage we come together and bond over the different battles each and every person has to fight.
I want people to know that they are seen and there is a community that will accept them for who they are. The hard rock and punk scene has always been that at its core and I hope to do my part to expand upon it.
In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
I think it’s the same challenges that have always faced artist but maybe on a larger scale. We tend to validate ourselves through others but art is SELF expression in every form from painting to writing to music so validating it through others opinions or how many Facebook likes you have is kind of redundant:
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
We don’t have any official recordings out YET. We do have a few live recordings up on Soundcloud and you can always follow us on social media and catch one of our live shows!
