Art & Life with Larry Stanley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Larry Stanley.

Larry, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I grew up wanting to be an actor. Somehow, someway right out of high school, I stumbled around the film industry in Dallas in my late teens. That led me to a brief stint in Hollywood, before returning home. They Keyword there is brief. I came back to Texas and took a few acting classes at Community Colleges across our fair burg. While in college I found a career in Radio working as Country DJ and Talk Show host for a while. At the age of 25, the opportunity to act in my first Indie Film (A Texas Tale) presented itself, Ever since then I have been hooked. I have produced five features since then, with a 6th on the way. I also produced my first documentary on Alexander Hamilton, titled “Channeling Hamilton” in 2018. “Channeling Hamilton” was just released on Amazon Prime earlier this month. I am really proud of how “Channeling Hamilton” turned out.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a filmmaking-aholic. I have made feature films to make people laugh, make people cry. Make people question their existence (maybe that’s a bit too far), but my latest film “Channeling Hamilton” was for educational purposes. I feel Channeling Hamilton really gives you some insight on our most controversial founding father, Alexander Hamilton. Did I mention, Channeling Hamilton is now available on Amazon Prime (is it ok if I work in another plug here? Ha!)

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities, and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
It is definitely tough being an indie filmmaker. You have to approach each project with the very real expectation that you aren’t going to make any money you put in back. As I get older, it gets tougher to throw money away on bad investments. However, the creative side of me won’t let me passion die. I just focus more on a budget(or try to) and work to stay within that budget. Where there is a way is an old cliché that is perfect for poor indie filmmakers. You just have to want to work for that way.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Most of my films (Decisions, Proud Souls, Grey Agenda, Mr. Happy Pants, and Channeling Hamilton) are on Amazon Prime. You can also find some of my Features on Maddy G TV ( a Roku Network).
