Art & Life with Lauren Hernandez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Hernandez.

Lauren, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
My story started out like most, I had a dream! That dream was to one day be a model, modeling everything from handbags to clothing to jewelry. I knew that I was destined for this career and lifestyle! I set my mind to that goal and started visiting modeling agencies at the age of 16. It was hard, I had to create a thick skin very early. Hearing things like you aren’t tall enough, your measurements need to be lower can really mess with you at that age. All it took though was that one yes, you’re perfect! I signed with my first agency at 16 and went on to sign with an ever-better agency at age 19. I’ve been with the Callidus agency for almost 5 years now, shooting with companies like Frito-Lay and Wrangler. It has truly been a dream come true.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My art is modeling; it is a way for me to make and create! It truly is an art form for me. There is so much that goes into modeling that a lot of people are not aware of. Once I’ve booked a job it is important to start communicating with the team, from the hairdresser, to the makeup artist, the stylist and in between. A “theme” or “mood” is created. We pick a location a time, the list goes on. When on set even something like picking the music being played is important. Just like a painter, everything plays a part in the making of our “masterpiece”. The message I’d like to think I bring from my modeling is the ability to see beauty in everything that you do. Sometimes I do photo-shoots in the most beautiful places others it may just be a local dairy queen; but when the photo comes back you truly see the beauty in every location, in every little detail.

How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
To me success means always doing your best, it isn’t how many physical rewards you’ve received but rather how many mental rewards you’ve received. A quality that I think is essential to success as an artist is confidence in yourself and your work. If you don’t love your work or what you do then that will portray straight across to your viewers. It isn’t about the likes or the fame or even the recognition, it’s about how it makes YOU feel. After all it is YOUR life. When others start to bring you fame, or recognition, it’s just a bonus.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
People can view my work in several different ways. I have been featured in the Cowboys and Indians magazine several times. I just recently did a TV commercial for Wrangler, and I am always working with local photographers. You can view my portfolio at callidusagency.com. Another great to view my work as well as my aesthetic is of course my Instagram, llauren_paigee.
