Art & Life with Lucas Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucas Johnson.

Lucas, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Ever since I can remember, I have imitated playing guitar or had a guitar in my hands. At the age of 9, I was enrolled in guitar lessons and took to playing. Only a couple of lessons in, my teacher walked out to my parents and said, “I think we have something here.” At 12, my parents took me to an open mic and that was the first of many times that I began to step on stage and play in front of an audience. When 5th grade ended, my parents enrolled me in classical violin lessons and that lead to me playing the violin as a fiddle. A couple of years later, I began to play fiddle with the Lake Travis Fiddlers and played with them for a total of 6 years. At the age of 17, I formed my first band, Innate Space, and played the Poodie Party and held a yearlong Tuesday night residency at Poodie’s Roadhouse. Things changed and so did the name of the band. When I was 18, my band and myself traveled to Seattle, Washington to record my debut album, Been Away. At that point, I decided to change the name of the band and use my name instead. We’ve had lengthy residencies at Poodie’s Roadhouse, Cedar Street Courtyard, and Friend’s in Austin, TX. While playing our weekly gig at Friend’s, in July of this year, Culture Club stopped in and asked if I would be interested in playing a song with Boy George & Culture Club at the ACL Live at Moody Theater the following night. Of course, I said, “YES!” That was an amazing experience and something I’ll never forget! Two weeks later, Paul Kemsley, Boy George’s Manager contacted us regarding opening for Boy George & Culture Club in Nashville, Tennessee at the Ryman Auditorium.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I’ve always had an eclectic taste in music, however my favorite genres by far are blues, funk, and psych rock. The reason that I play is the same for a lot of people, it’s fun. I love playing the music that I do, I can’t really see myself doing much else.

What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
I believe that throughout history, the world has had its fair share of issues. Artists throughout time have had to adapt their art to reflect the issues of their time. My song “Alone” reflects the current issues that are plaguing our society as a whole. Not just at the local or national level, but at the international level we’re seeing a great awakening and I speak of that in my song.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
The best place to go to is my website. The website has links to all of my music, videos, pictures, and social media pages. Please go to www.lucasjohnsonband.com to follow me and my music.
