Today we’d like to introduce you to Prince Gee.
Prince, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’m originally from Saginaw, Michigan born and raised. I moved to Arlington, TX in 2010 at the age of 15. Art has always been a part of my life since my early childhood years. Like any small child, I was drawing stick figures and stuff like that and thought I was doing something. I had older cousins that could draw anime characters and cartoons, and it would look exactly like them and when I would see their drawings and think “I need to get on their level.”
By the time I was about 8 or 9, I could draw any character I look at and copy it to a T. By that time, I knew I was serious about art and couldn’t see myself doing anything else with my life but that. Between then and now, I worked day in and day out perfecting my skills and my craft, I even attended a school of arts from 8th to 9th grade. I developed my own style and taught myself how to use other mediums like marker, paint and digital and now here we are.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My art has a really strong manga/anime and cartoon-like style. I grew up watching a lot of anime and playing a lot of video games like Street Fighter and Tekken, and I was always so intrigued by the artwork and thought it was so dope to where it was mainly all I wanted to draw. I like to create works of whatever inspires me not only as a creative but as a young black man. I’m heavily inspired by Hip Hop culture, especially 90s Hip Hop culture because the energy was so dope and more authentic, and also, I grew up in that world with my dad being a music producer. The main thing I want people to take from my work is to be yourself.
You don’t have to follow or copy what everyone else is doing; it’s way cooler to just do what makes you feel good. Legends are those who create their own waves not ride someone else’s. If it’s anything I want people to take from my art, it’s that. When you look at my artwork, you should know it’s Gee. It’s what I love, how I’m feeling, what I’m thinking, it’s my authentic self. I have never been one to create what or how people tell me to, I create how I want. That’s what art is about, freedom of expression. The way I see it, if you’re not doing it because you truly love it and/or not doing it the way you want to do it, then you’re not truly free.
Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
BE YOURSELF. People will doubt you, hate on you, sleep on you but no matter what always remain true to yourself and true to your craft. That’s the only way to truly prosper. For me, everything happens for a reason; you have to go through things in order to evolve so there isn’t really anything I wish I would’ve done differently.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
You can see my work on my Instagram @princegeetheartist, I have prints for sale on my online store and you can catch me showcasing my work at the Pancakes & Booze show on Saturday, November 17th at Deep Ellum.
