Today we’d like to introduce you to Sally Miller.
Sally, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I am Dallas-born and -raised, attended Lake Highlands High School, and am a University of North Texas grad. I’ve always had an appreciation for beauty, art, and culture, so I studied Art Education at UNT with a focus on printmaking and ceramics. After college, I took a chance on NYC and became a custom layout designer for a boutique paper store. I love big city life and all that is offered in the buzzing metropolitan scene, and I even had the opportunity later on for extended travels to Dubai and Seoul for cultural immersion and world view expansion.
After about seven years away, I finally returned to Dallas, and I began teaching art. Soon after, I met the love of my life, and we began our own life here in Dallas. We love living by White Rock Lake and getting to watch the sunsets over the water on the drive home, especially after a good Texas thunderstorm. Natural beauty is not to be missed out on being a city cat!
This past year I was able to hang up my art teacher hat and stay home with our little girl, which allowed me capacity to not just dabble in a long-time hobby but actually launch my love for flower-arranging into a full-time business. It is the biggest blessing to get to do something I love while making the most out of the time with my family.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
To put it simply, I use the elements of art to design beautiful floral arrangements. I’ve always had a love for flowers, and my desire is to bring florals into homes and local establishments so that floral beauty spreads a beat of joy. Flowers to me are a simple, exquisite form of natural beauty, and when the elements of art (colors, shapes, lines, textures, and values) are used together in a purposeful way, they really ignite aesthetic beauty.
The heartbeat behind what I am doing is the power it has to spread love, kindness, and joy to those around us every day. Flowers don’t only have to be for special occasions; they can be a visual piece in our everyday life to brighten our spirits. Just a glance at flowers can put a smile on my face, and I want that for others as well ‑ a chance to stop and smell the roses and make our world a little more euphoric.
Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities, and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
Don’t cheapen your skill. Surround yourself with people that support you, even if it’s not financial support. Have people who believe in what you do and that will encourage you to continue the hustle. Don’t be afraid to take risks. Pay close attention to your expenses, and get your books in order from the beginning. If you are the artistic type and don’t have business experience, get help!
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
