Good morning ., we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Painting. Painting art. When I’m deep in a piece of work and things are just “clicking” it’s amazing! I’ll lose track of time, next thing I know hours have gone by. I’m knee deep in connecting to the piece in a way that is hard to explain.
There are definitely phases of emotions when I’m painting, from I love it, it’s amazing, to I hate it and paint over it. (Which I do more often than not) But I’ve always trusted the process and things seem to work out.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, my name is Derek David Baron, I’m a contemporary abstract artist.
Most of my work is based on childhood memories and experiences. The stories behind my work are what makes them so unique. I find telling the story to people helps them connect to the work. It also triggers the viewers own memories and they can share.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
Oh man! So many things…lol
One thing that sticks out in my mind.
(I actually did a painting about this)
I was an awkward teenage boy, tall, thin, lanky. My father would always tell me that I had no dexterity. It was the 70’s/80’s and that was just how they parented back then.
Looking back as an adult, yeah, I was young and a little awkward but I had dexterity. F@%k him for always saying that to me!…lol
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I fight that feeling every day.
Don’t get me wrong, I love what I do!
I can’t imagine doing anything else. However, working every day pouring my heart and soul into my work and then not selling any work for months… yeah, I question my sanity.
Fortunately my wife and I have another online business.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?

Yes I’ll be respectful and courteous but very real.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I believe I’m doing what I was born to do.
From such a young age I was always drawing or doing some kind of art. I’d sit in my room when I was a kid and just draw for hours. It’s always been in me. (Art) Even when I’ve abandoned it for years, it always came back.
