Becca Moore of Uptown/Knox-Henderson on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Becca Moore shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Becca, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I love to wander. Wandering is the best way to find the hidden treasures in our surroundings. Walking the street of a city I’m visiting, even the city where I live, provides me with a point of view–a perspective–that allows me to find the flowers, the art, the architecture, the colors, the textures, the smells, the languages, the music of the area. Wandering provides space for changing a plan, or the direction of my travels. I am able to learn and completely experience the space I occupy.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Becca. I am a complicated, messy story, not unlike most. People are far more complicated and deeper than we see from our view of the surface. I’m a writer who made a living for years as a private investigator, and am still a partner in the firm. After taking a step away from the firm to focus on my writing, I fell into helping a friend, who had recently retired from radio, with his podcast, and then his return to radio. After leaving radio for the second and final time, the two of us decided we could create our own radio. Terrestrial radio and t.v. aren’t where the greater audience is geting their entertainment, news and education anymore. Podcasts is where we would find an audience. Stolen Water Media was born. That was 14 months ago. We now have a network of seven podcasts we manage and produce.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Anna Pavlova. I had every intention of being a ballerina. I watched replys of her performances on public television and rented vhs tapes of her ballets. My big goal was to perfect her pirouette–she was flawless. I’ve also always wanted to be a racecar driver.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You’re going to do it! You’ll do it yourself. But not all by yourself. You won’t be alone, even though sometimes you’ll feel like you are. Don’t loose focus and don’t loose hope. You are going to do it!

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That popularity is worth sacrificing integrity.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Building a company solidly standing on a foundation of integrity. I keep hearing that popularity and simple nonsense of so many podcasts is what appeals to the dumbed-down culture in our society. That’s so insulting to the majority of intelligent podcast listeners. Not to mention, how horrible is it to contribute to, or encourage further simple thinking? We have a company producing podcasts that are fun, ridiculous, newsy, informative, educational, and full of mindless fun for intellegent people who want to put down the business of the day and relax. We don’t have to fall into the trap of dumbed down content–that’s not true content–and “we want to be popular.” This isn’t high school. High school is four years. If you only want to last four years, have at it. I want to last through growing up, building a career, raising a family, your children going to high school, and their growing up, building a career, raising a family, repeat. It’s what my partner did with radio in Dallas-Fort Worth 30+ years ago. It’s what we intend to do again.
